The students spent the week working on a Spring poetry project. Miss Gobin started the lesson by reading a few fiction and nonfiction stories about Spring and discussing what happens during the season by relating them to the five senses.
As a class, they brainstormed and filled in a graphic organizer with adjectives that described each of the five senses during Spring. Next, the students worked independently on their poem by following the format and creating similes (using the words like or as) to compare the season to each of the senses. For example; Spring is as ____ as a _____, Spring feels like... , Spring looks like... , After completing their "sloppy copy" the students typed their poem into a template which will be displayed on the artwork they have been working on. While they typed, they were asked to edit their work by checking for capitals, periods and correct spelling.
We spent a lot of time this week enjoying some read alouds. We really focused on using expression!
In Math, we continued working on division. The students learned to...
-share items equally, when given the number of sets or the number of items in each set
-solve division word problems when given the total number of items being divided and either the number of groups or the number in each group
They learned a new math game called "Cover the Grid" to help with their basic facts and strategic thinking.
They also played "Multiplication Battleship".
In Social, we started learning about Ukraine! The students were introduced to the flag and coat of arms.
Throughout the unit, we will be reading from the textbook and making sketch notes. After reading each chapter, the students are given time to write down or draw/sketch pictures to represent any of the information they learned. There are no rules and no format that they have to follow, they can just freely display their ideas in any way that is meaningful to them. After giving them time to work independently, we worked as a class to compile a complete set of jot notes which they will be using near the end of the unit to create a class slideshow presentation about Ukraine. This week we read about living in the town and country as well as traditions and celebrations.
In Art, the students worked on optical illusion kites while learning about different types of lines. We also discussed cool and warm colours by looking at the colour wheel. After the kites are finished, the students will attach their Spring poems onto the kite tail.
This week we focused on striking skills in PE. The students really enjoyed badminton and rallying back and forth with their friends.
WOW!!! It was so great to see how many students flew to another country after Spring Break!!!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!
