The Day the Crayons Quit!

The students were so excited to return from Easter break and find out that they had all received letters from the Easter Bunny about the jobs they had applied for. The spent a bit of time reading over their letters and sharing them with friends.



We started a new writing project this week based on the book "The Day the Crayons Quit" written by Drew Daywalt. The book contains a letter from each crayon colour to a little boy named Duncan. After Miss Gobin read the story to the class, they had a conversation about why the crayons were unhappy and the reasons for them wanting to quit. The students were given a choice about which crayon they wanted to help and started filling out a graphic organizer about what the crayons complaints were, what Duncan uses the crayon to colour and what the crayons requests are for the future. Using the graphic organizer, the students started writing a friendly letter back to their crayon from Duncan's point of view.




We read Chapter 4 in "Mouse and the Motorcycle". This week's activity was to take simple sentences and make them into compound sentences using the words and, but and so.


The students added to their "Language Notebooks" after reviewing what an adjective is. They wrote down a variety of words to describe nouns under headings such as, size, feeling, number and colour.


We also completed a making words activity from the letters a, i, o, d, p, n, r, r, s. The students made 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter words and then figured out the mystery word which was RAINDROPS.




In Math, we completed our Division unit. We spent some time reviewing and the students wrote their test. Next week, we will begin Measurement.


They learned a new math game to help them practice their multiplication facts.



We finished making sketch notes about Ukraine after reading the last two chapters in the textbook on environment, goods and services. Using their sketch notes, we added to our class jot notes. Next week, the students will be paired up to work on one of the topic areas to create a slideshow summarizing the information.


In PE, the students worked through a variety of fitness stations. Every day, they had eight new skills to work on. On the final day the students were able to choose their own fitness activity at each station.




We used a variety of media in Art this week to create a sunflower, which is the national flower of Ukraine. After reading about the unhappy crayons in LA, we decided that incorporating them into our project would we a good idea. The students completed a directed drawing of a sunflower, and then used crayons to outline and emphasize certain parts of their flower. Then they used water colour paints, blending colours and filling in their picture.
