Botanic Gardens...

The students enjoyed learning about different insects and bugs at the UofA Botanic Gardens. We participated in two programs; Going Buggy and Wetland Wonders. The students also loved a game called Camoflauge and the butterfly life cycle relay race! We lucked out and had beautiful weather and, believe it or not, the annoying little mosquitoes were out in small numbers.

The students wrote about their favourite moments and what they learned on the trip with a "Field Trip Wrap Up".

The students took part in the last Wellness Day of the school year. They rotated through four stations throughout the afternoon. Some examples of the stations were healthy snacks, yoga, mindfulness, cooperative games, and positive mindset.

In Language Arts this week, we compared "The Three Little Pigs" to "The Three Little Ninjas". The students filled out another typed of graphic organizer to compare and contrast the story elements. 

The students started writing their own "Three Little Pig" stories by creating their characters. They came up with names, descriptions and personality traits.

In Math, the students worked on...

-deciding on the most appropriate unit to measure length or distance

-comparing measurements in different lengths

The students are really enjoying observing all of the changes that are taking place within our classroom. They have been writing about the daily changes happening to the butterfly, which are all in their chrysalises now. They were also sooooo excited to see their seeds sprout!

We had our Bike Day on Thursday! The students brushed up on their hand signals and practiced their "stops and starts" before heading out onto the course!

Fractured Fairy Tales...

We started our Fractured Fairy Tale writing project this week. We are going to base our stories on the tale of "The Three Little Pig". After reading a few different versions of the books and talking about the story elements, we read "The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark". We used this spin off story to fill in a venn diagram comparing and contrasting it to the original version. Next week, we will do another comparison and then begin story writing.

We read chapters 9, 10 and 11 from "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" novel. The students completed a "MISSING" poster for Ralph's motorcycle. We used sample posters to gather ideas for the information that needed to be included. They described the missing motorcycle, when it was last seen, provided a contact number and some students even included a reward. They also completed another writing activity about what a science teacher would do if they ever found Ralph, the mouse. The class come up with some very creative ideas such as behaviour studies and using Ralph to communicate with other mice.

We have been starting our day by doing some Buddy Reading every morning. The students have been assigned stories from the Collections series to read.

In Math we continued measuring using meters. The students went outside to measure a variety of objects, which they shared with the class. It was great to see them working as a team! They were also introduced to kilometers and worked through problem solving questions, requiring them to change units of measurement to find the answer.

The class was so excited to finally have their Yogurt Parfait Multiplication party! They earned toppings by achieving a score of 80% or more on their challenge test each week.

The students presented their slides on Ukraine. They all did a wonderful job summarizing the information in paragraphs and adding images that were related to their topic.

We started our last unit in Science! The students are very excited to learn about the different life cycles of plants and animals. A special delivery arrived at the beginning of the week!!! We will be observing the larvae over the next month or so, as they make changes and turn into butterflies. Every day, the students have been writing in their observation journals.

We also learned about the life cycle of a sunflower and the students planted seeds with 3A. They have learned about the needs of plants and will be taking care of them for the next four weeks while observing any changes that take place.

They have also been enjoying a collection of life cycle books that we have in the class.

I brought in a wasp nest that I found in my yard. We passed it around and took a look at all the amazing layers. This sparked a lot of conversations and stories!
