Earth Rangers

Our school enjoyed a visit from the Earth Rangers this week. They spoke to us about climate change and how it is affecting our environment and wildlife. We had the opportunity to see some of these creatures, watch some videos and play some trivia games. A postcard was sent home with the website address.

We completed a few different activities this week for spelling. One of our favourites is Draw the Meaning. Prior to completing this activity, we discuss the word list and the different meanings that each word has. The kids are then left to draw an appropriate picture to match the meaning of the word.

They also worked on putting words in alphabetical order and filled in a crossword puzzle, finding words to match the meanings.

The students completed their spelling test on the Spelling City website this week. You will find a printed copy of their test in their mailbags. The students are encouraged to use this website at home to practice their spelling words.

We completed our Monster Under My Bed writing activity and they are on display in our classroom.

The students worked on a Making Words activity using the letters... a, e, e, i, b, h, n, t, r. They used these letters to make 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, letter words. Their mystery word was HIBERNATE.

We also spent some time finishing the stories in our Collections Series. The students are encouraged to follow along while paragraphs are read aloud by different students. As we come across new vocabulary words, we discuss them and sometimes look them up on Google. This week, the students really wanted to learn more about catfish and dugong and were asked to find one fact for homework. Thank you to those students who came back to school with an interesting fact to share! We are planning to begin our first novel study soon.

We introduced the students to a few websites that they can use for "Listening to Reading".

The students completed two more letters in their cursive duotangs; u and w. They are sure loving it and you have probably noticed more handwriting in their agendas each week!

In Math this week, the students worked on...
-reading and writing number words for three digit numbers
-using base ten blocks to compare pairs of one, two and three digit numbers and determining which number is greater
-representing numbers on a number line

The students have been working on the Mathletics website when they complete their workbook pages. We have attached three new tasks which should be completed before Halloween. If they have not completed them, they will be encouraged to do them at home next week.

Our Mapping assignments were turned in this week and we were so impressed with the hard work the students put in to completing this activity. The maps were marked and are now on display in our classroom.

In order to learn about other countries around the world, it is helpful for the students to know where they live. We started by talking about the 7 continents and the oceans surrounding the land. Then we zoomed in and focused on the countries within North America. At the end of the week, we started looking at our country of Canada.

The students at RBES enjoyed "Take Me Outside" day! Our class learned a new game called "Chuck the Chicken" and we had an extra "secret recess".

In Art, the students created pumpkin lanterns and floating ghosts to decorate the room for Halloween next week!

The focus in PE this week was locomotion and target games. The students put their skills to the test with some new warm up games and an old favourite called "Skittles".

Congratulations to our super readers this week! We were so excited to see how many reading goals our students made at interviews. To stay on track with our home reading program, your child should be at 600 minutes by the end of October. Please let us know if you'd like us to send books home for you to read each night with your child.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!
