Pink Shirt Day!

The students at RBES supported Pink Shirt Day and participated in a variety of activities to show kindness towards others. Our class designed their own t-shirts and crafted some special bracelets for people around the school.

In Language Arts, we worked on acrostic poems. They were asked to use the word KINDNESS and come up with phrases for each letter of the word. The students have been working on trying to edit their own work before handing it in, making sure it makes sense and finding any words that they are unsure of the spelling. After editing, they typed the poems on Google Docs for publishing.

The students also completed "Guess the Covered Word". They really enjoy making lists of words that would make sense. After completing the poem, we found contractions, compound words and rhyming patterns.

Our "Making Words" activity this week included the following letters; o, i, e, t, t, f, r, s, b. Students made 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 letter words. They are becoming experts at this activity! The mystery word was FROSTBITE!

The students worked on their third "All About Me" diary entry. They picked a topic that they were interested in, wrote a topic sentence, five detailed sentences and a conclusion.

We have now finished learning all of the letters in cursive. This week they worked on x and z.

In Math, the students wrote a short quiz on changing repeated addition into multiplication. They also learned how to create arrays, using columns and rows. Later on, they will be using arrays to make and solve multiplication equations.

They learned a new math game to practice their multiplication table. They rolled two dice, multiplied the numbers and then placed a game chip on the product. The first person to have four game chips in a row, wins the game.

In Science, we completed a challenge to determine the strength of shapes and how to make a shape stronger. We concluded that if you add a diagonal to reinforce the shape from corner to corner, it will be stronger.

We had a great opportunity this week to work with Peter Caron. He taught us about the construction of different bridges and the variety of shapes that can be found. He brought four types with him, an arch, beam, cantilever and suspension bridge. The students had the chance to construct the bridges with their group. They had to work together as a team and do a lot of problem solving in order to build the bridge properly. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who came to help supervise the construction!

We completed a bridge information booklet by writing jot notes and sketching six different types of bridges. We also looked at some famous and cool bridges around the world.

The students worked on their kicking, shooting and dribbling skills in PE with a variety of stations.

The students showed off their sketching skills in Art this week. They used a few suggested websites to complete some directed drawings of their favourite things.

Here are the super readers for this week! Way to go!!!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
