Orange Shirt Day...Every Child Matters

The staff and students at RBES participated in Orange Shirt Day on Monday October 1st to show support and awareness about the residential school system. We focused on "Every Child Matters" by watching a few videos, reading stories and completing an activity about why they matter in the world.

Here are the links to the videos we watched in class.

We started our spelling program and each week we will be focusing on a different sound or pattern. The students will be given 15 words with an additional 5 words from our Word Wall. These Word Wall Words are high frequency words that they should be able to read and spell by the end of the year. We are hoping that proper spelling of the words will be transferred to their daily writing. The weekly spelling words will be reviewed at school by doing activities such as filling in missing letters, word searches, drawing the meaning and an online program called "Spelling City". Spelling tests will be written on Fridays.

The students read a story called "Owen and the Tortoise" together as a class. Then the students were given ten multiple choice questions to assess their comprehension. They were able to read back in the story to find answers if they needed.

After reading a few stories about Thanksgiving, we brainstormed what kinds of things we are thankful for. The students were shown how to write an acrostic poem using the word "THANKFUL". Each letter of the word is used to start a phrase which describes something to be thankful for. We made a list of words that start with each of those letters and then made a poem together as a class, before the students were asked to write their own. The "sloppy copies" (rough copies) were then edited together with us and written out as a good copy.

The students really enjoy working on their cursive writing. A lot of them have started handwriting their agenda notes.

In Math, the students worked on...

-using ordinal numbers (written in words such as first, second, third, or numerals such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd) to identify and answer questions about positions of objects or symbols in lists.
-identifying rows and columns in a table
-identifying and describing patterns in a table of numbers
-using and creating T-tables for number patterns made by adding or subtracting
-identifying the rules of simple number patterns using T-tables and extend these number patterns
-using T-tables to solve word problems

The students worked on addition +4 this week in Mad Minutes. These are becoming challenging for the students so please try to practice with them over the weekend so they are confident when they start the new set. Next week will be addition +5.

We finished our Rocks and Minerals lap book by adding the pocket for the vocabulary flash cards. The students used these to quiz each other in class in order to help prepare for their unit test.

The students were assessed on their knowledge of the three rock types, the properties of a rock, the rock cycle and layers of the earth. Their test included matching questions, diagrams and short answer.

The students have been patiently waiting for our "Rock Talk". They were so excited to share special rocks from home. They were able to tell the class a few different properties of the rocks and use information they learned throughout the unit.

The students worked on their "Rock Art" project. They started by painting a base coat and then adding designs if they wanted to. Then they were given googly eyes, feathers, pom poms, and pipe cleaners to finish decorating their creations. Thank you so much to Quinten's Grandma for coming in to help the students use the hot glue gun. Next week, they will be writing about their art and then displaying their finished projects in the hallway.

To celebrate the upcoming holiday, Thanksgiving, the students were introduced to "Art for Kids Hub" on YouTube. These videos show how to draw step-by-step. This week, the students completed a drawing of a turkey.

In PE, we focused on cooperative games using different gym equipment.

Congratulations to our amazing readers this week!

Exciting news!!! We would like to welcome Mrs. Livingstone who will become a new addition to our classroom on Tuesday! She is a student teacher from the University of Alberta who will be joining us for the next nine weeks to complete her practicum.

Have a wonderful weekend! It looks like we might get a little bit of sunshine!
