Tunisia Day

This week we finished our study of Tunisia and celebrated with Tunisia Day. The students created bean mosaics, did straw bracelet weaving, played Mancala and sampled couscous, baklava, dates and bread with olive oil and Zaatar seasoning. It was a great afternoon, submersed in the Tunisian culture.

We rotated through a few different "word work" centers to practice our spelling words this week. We used Scrabble tiles, magnet letters and whiteboards.

The students completed a reading comprehension activity of "Jenny Loves Yoga". We read the story together as a class and then the students were given multiple choice questions. They were allowed to use the book to look back and find answers.

We began story writing by looking at different versions of The Three Little Pigs. We compared the characters, setting, problem, and solution. We also discussed the main events that take place in all of the versions we read. The students will be using their understanding of story elements to create their own fractured fairy tale following the layout of The Three Little Pigs.

In Math, we looked at different ways of sharing (deciding how many sets there are or how many in each set). We also made division sentences by looking at sets and we created addition sentences from division sentences.

In Social, we finished our study of Tunisia by reading about natural resources and completing a Tunisia crossword puzzle. We also read aloud a mini book called "Wish You Were Here...Tunisia", describing a little girl's trip to Tunisia through emails and postcards.

The students enjoyed a short video called "Tarek, The Camel Racer". This was a story told by a little boy who lives in Tunisia.

We had beautiful weather this week, so we decided to take our book bags and reading pillows outside to read in the sun!

In Physical Education this week we worked on badminton skills. The students were shown the proper way to hold a racket, practiced their serving and had time to rally back and forth. We also took advantage of the nice weather outside.

Every week, we meet with our Grade 1 buddy class, but this time they had a special surprise for us! They are learning how to take care of living things and adopted 100 super worms. The Grade 1 students loved teaching our class all about these creatures.

Congrats to our super readers this week!

We are so proud of this week's Student of the Week! Way to go!!!
