Christmas Elves Kick Off...

On Friday, the Grade 3 classes kicked off the Annual Food Drive for the Devon Christmas Elves! As part of our Global Citizenship unit in Social Studies and to help celebrate the season of giving, the grade 3’s are organizing the Christmas Elves food drive within our school. The Devon Christmas Elves are all volunteers who try to make sure every family in Devon has the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season and we would like to help again this year.

Every year, the students at RBES work together to collect over 1000 food items for people in need. Our school is the Christmas Elves biggest supporter! We are hoping we can collect the same amount this year or more. We will need families to help us out by bringing in items such as cans of soup, jello, Kraft dinner, peanut butter or canned meat.

This year we are missing the biggest donation evenings with our Christmas Concerts being later than usual, we have decided to have a contest between the classrooms. The winning class will win a ROOTBEER FLOAT party!

On December 7th, the grade 3 students will go around to each classroom to pick up the donations and get the class total. On December 8th, we will have an assembly to reveal the grand total of our school donations, announce our winning classroom and present the items to the Christmas Elves. After the assembly, the grade three students will be delivering the items to the depot and helping the volunteers sort food.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! LET'S GO 3B!!!

In Language Arts, the students worked on the good copy of their Cats VS Dogs opinion paragraphs. Then they used the Art Hub for Kids tutorial to illustrate a cat or a dog and coloured a background.

We finished our Freckle Juice by completing a few more activities in our novel study booklet and participating in Author's Chair so the students could share their version of Chapter Six.

We talked about the difference between fact and opinion statements. As a class, we read each statement about the novel and decided whether it was a fact from the story or an a person's opinion.

The students also wrote about the setting...where and when the story took place and then they drew a detailed picture based on what they had visualized while we read the story.

Finally, the students summarized the important events from Freckle Juice in a comic strip. Then they completed a reading comprehension assessment.

We completed the cursive letters Kk and Bb this week.

In Math, we worked through the following concepts...

1. Practice representing numbers between number words, base ten blocks and expanded form.
2. Use base ten blocks to compare one, two and three digit numbers and determine which is greater.
The students were also taught a new place value game which can be played at home with a deck of cards. To begin with, the 10, J, Q, and K should be placed aside because they can not be used for place value. Then separate the cards into two piles, each player taking a pile (if you are playing with two players). Each player flips over the top three cards of their pile, rearranging them to make the greatest number possible. The player with the greatest number takes all of the cards. If a player runs out of cards, they may use the cards they have collected to make a new pile. As soon as a player is completely out of cards, the game is over and the other player win the game.

In Science, we did a listening activity called "Classifying Sounds" to compare the volume and pitch of different objects being dropped. The students also learned about how a decibel meter can be used to determine how loud or soft a sound is.

We also completed Hearing and Sound vocabulary word cards for our lapbooks.

The students finished their winter cardinal paintings by using a shiny acrylic paint for their backgrounds. They sure did a wonderful job!

This week we spent some time on the chromebooks and Ms. Potter showed us some tips and tricks with Google Drawings. After creating our Christmas Elves posters, we decided we'd begin our memory book scrapbook pages. We shared all of the pictures taken in September and October with the students and they created their own pages. They chose their own font, style and colour, background colour and picture shape and size. They shared their completed pages with us and these will go into their memory books as a keepsake for their Grade 3 year. They did a GREAT job!

This week in PE the students worked on throwing and catching skills. They worked through a number of individual activities to practice their skills before moving onto some fun new class games such as Jail Ball and Touchdown.

Congratulations to our super reader this week!
