Bike Safety

The kids enjoyed a week of biking activites.

We had guests from the Town of Devon who came in to properly fit and adjust all the helmets.

The public health nurse also came out to talk to the kids about the importance of wearing a helmet. She passed around a replica of a brain so the students could feel it. She also showed the kids an experiment where she dropped an egg wearing a helmet to show how it was protected.
The bike course outdoors gave the students the opportunity to practice hand signals, starting and stopping and manoeuvring through pylons. The week was wrapped up with the Bike Rodeo.
Obstacle course...
Slow race...

For Language Arts, we worked on opinion writing. We listened to a Read Along titled I AM THE DOG, I AM THE CAT.
We then discussed what the word "opinion" meant. Some ideas were...
Personal preference, whether you like it or not, what you think and not what they think & when you choose something.
Then we brainstormed words to describe cats and dogs.
Then the students chose their favourite of the 2. They were given an idea sheet to follow so they could create a paragraph reflecting their opinion on the better pet.
The paragraphs and illustrations turned out fantastic!

In Math, we continue to do mad minutes each day. The students are given 3 minutes to complete 30 questions. We are now working on multiplication facts.

We are continuing to work through our multiplication unit. The students are catching on quick and seem to really enjoy multiplying. We discussed dividing items into equal groups. The students were given a number of chips and had to organize them into equal rows. An ARRAY shows objects arranged in equal rows.
We also talked about how multiplication relates to repeated addition. For example, 5X4 is the same as 4+4+4+4+4. They wrote multiplication and repeated addition sentences to represent groups of pictures.

In Science, the students were partnered up and chose an animal to research about their life cycle. The information they gather will be displayed on a poster board and presented to the class. The students have been really focused and eager to work on this.

The bridges that were completed at home were also presented and tested this week. We were very impressed with the effort and understanding that went into this project!

In Social Studies, the students "shared" their Ukrainian slideshow and used the smartboard to present their work to the class. We were so proud of the effort they put into their work!
We have travelled to Peru, our last destination for the year. The students were put into groups to research different parts of the community, "Food", "Goods and Services", "Environment" and "Culture". They will use the textbook, books from the library and the Internet to gather information for their project.

For Art this week, the students created a monarch butterfly using pointalism.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
