Global Citizenship

As part of our Grade 3 curriculum, Global Citizenship, we decided to help out the people of Fort McMurray. The Grade 3 students all had an important job in making this a huge succes. We had four crews help out throughout the week...posters, set up, sales and clean up.  Thank you to all of our wonderful parents who sent in baked goods! We appreciate your generosity! The sale generated $1200 which will be donated to the Red Cross.
Discover E from the University of Alberta came out this week to teach the students about testing materials, building bridges and also did a session on hearing and sound. These sessions tie in with our Science curriculum.

We also continued our Life Cycle unit. Mrs. Dupperon has given us some frog eggs which we are hoping will hatch within the next few weeks. We also borrowed a frog for a few days so the kids could see what a wood frog looks like. After all of the students had a chance to check him out, we let him go so that he could feel safe in his own environment.
As a class, we read about the different stages of a frog life cycle so the students know what to expect.
In Lanuguage Arts, we continued our Backyard Bug writing project. Students finished their descriptive paragraphs and met with us to edit their work. After everyone was finished, they traded paragraphs so that another student could draw their bug using only their written description. The students were so excited to see the results at the "bug reveal"!
In Math, the students started learning about 3D shapes. We talked about the difference between a pyramid and prism. A pyramid has one base and triangular faces. A prism has two matching polygon bases and rectangular faces. The students also used 3D shapes to learn about edges and vertices of these shapes.

For gym, we did some gross motor relay races. The kids really enjoyed this and many improved their skipping and balancing skills!

In Art, we watched a short video about four different types of bridges...suspension, beam, truss and arch. We discussed the design of these four types and they were shown how to sketch. The students picked their favourite type and designed their own bridge. Then they traced their bridge with permanent marker and did a watercolour wash over top! They really did an amazing job and we were very impressed with their drawings.
We have a new addition to our class. The students asked for a friend to take home so that they could write diary entries about their adventures and share them with the class. They are so excited to have a turn with their new friend, Ginger!

Congratulations to our students who flew to a new country this week!
We are so proud of our new Student of the Week! Way to go!
