Clay...

This week, the students were involved in a clay project. The "Clay Guy" taught us how to make Peruvian masks. Step-by-step, the students created their own unique cultural art piece. Thank you to the wonderful parent volunteers who came to help us with this project! In a few weeks, our projects will be sent back to us, ready for painting.

For Language Arts this week, we have been working on illustrating our published stories. The students have been working so hard on their pictures. They have even been searching how to draw certain animals.

We have also started reading "Charlotte's Web". We are all really enjoying this book and most of the class has fallen in love with Wilbur, the pig. We think they may want a pet pig of their very own! We have been stopping frequently throughout the book, discussing new vocabulary words.

We also continued to read from our Collection series. We enjoyed a story called "Building Tunnels". This story tied in nicely with the Building/Survivor unit we just finished.

In Science, we started our new unit on "Life Cycles". Students have been partnered up and are working on learning about a specific animal. They will be researching the characteristics, food it needs to survive, habitat and the life cycle. Their information will then be put into a Google Slide presentation so that they can teach the class about what they learned. This week, they have been looking through books and on the internet to make jot notes.

Guppy- Milla and Logan
Frog- Johnno and Doyle
Butterfly- Nevada and Madison H.
Mealworm- Carmen and Madison E.
Robin- Benjamin and Austin
Gerbil- Alexis and Madelyn
Garter Snake- Spencer and Jason
Pillbug- Gio and Toby

In Social, the students have been divided into 4 groups to research about our final country, Peru!
The groups have been assigned a specific area to become experts on and share with the class. They are recording all information gathered on chart paper and will transfer this information to a "suitcase" to present to the class. They are using library books, the text book and chrome books to research their area.

In Math, we finished up our unit with a "show what you know" of multiplication and division. The students did very well on this and we will be moving on to study fractions next week.

Education Week

For Education Week, our class was involved in school-wide peer learning. Three students from our class were chosen to teach other students paper folding...airplanes, fortune tellers and origami mice.

Our bridge assignment was due on Friday and this week we spent time sharing and testing our bridges. We were very pleased with the creative and effective bridges built.

We have begun our study of Peru. Thank you to Benjamin for sharing some exciting items and pictures. We are looking forward to exploring our final country!

We have started a Reader's Theater in Language Arts. They have been separated into three groups and have been working hard to learn their lines. We have been practicing fluency and expression.

In Math, we learned that division is a shortcut for repeated subtraction of the same number. Students practiced using repeated subtraction to answer division questions.

12 divided by 3

12-3-3-3-3=0 ( We subtracted the 3, four times.)

For Art this week, we decided to incorporate our life cycles unit in science. The students were introduced to the technique of pointillism and monarch butterflies. They watched a National Geographic video on these butterflies and they worked on their art.

Our first session is done. Next week, we will add colour to the wings.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!

April showers bring May flowers...

We have spent some time preparing for Education Week, which will take place next week. All classes were involved in a "Teacher Portrait" project. Our class learned how to sketch and shade faces, using guidelines.

On Monday, students will also take part in sessions of their choice. This is an activity that goes along with the theme of Education Week, "We are Teachers". Our class decided to teach a session on paper folding. We will teach other students how to do origami, paper airplanes and fortune tellers. Three students from our class volunteered to be teachers on Monday afternoon. The rest of our class will take part in other sessions being taught around the school.

In Language Arts, we worked very hard to finish our "Three Little Pigs" spin off stories. They will be typed and ready for illustrating next week. They are very excited about publishing a book.

We continued our Shel Silverstein poetry study. This week we focused on the books, "Runny Babbit" and "Don't Bump the Glump".

We have been trying to incorporate handwriting into a lot of our daily activities. Students have been using cursive writing in their agendas and spelling activities.

In Math, we continue to learn about division, using concrete and visual representations. Students were given a homework assignment to come up with their own division story problem to demonstrate their understanding of equal sharing and equal groups. We shared these with the class and took turns solving each other's questions.

Science this week was all about bridge building at home! We can tell that the students spent a lot of time working on their bridge projects this week. They all look stable, strong and creative! We will be presenting these next week.

In Art, students used triangle scrapbook pieces to make mosaics.

Congratulations to this week and next week's Student of the Week". Students are allowed to bring in special photos, drawings or stories to pin up on the Special Student board in our classroom. At the end of the week, they will read their favorite book to the class.
