We decided that our butterflies were ready to explore the great outdoors. We took them outside and opened the enclosure to be released. We had to be very patient because some of our butterflies didn't want to leave! A few lucky girls were able to get the butterflies to land on them before they took off on their new adventures! We were very careful not to touch their wings. At the Botanic Gardens, the students learned that the oil from our hands is very harmful to the butterflies.
We finally finished publishing our fairy tales! The students enjoyed illustrating title pages for their stories. If we have time, we are hoping to have an "Authors Chair" to give the students an opportunity to read their stories to the class.
We completed more cursive letters this week. We have now added Ll, Ee, Mm and Nn to the list of letters we can write.
In Math, we worked on our Shape and Space unit. We learned about different polygons and sorting them according to the number of sides (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, octagons). We also learned about 3-D shapes and how to describe them according to the shape of the faces and the number of vertices and edges.
We also started talking about mass and using grams and kilograms as units of measurement. The students were able to estimate the mass of different objects by using a referent for g and kg.
We read about Communities in Peru this week. We learned about the differences between living in the village and in the city.
We started working on Peruvian masks to celebrate culture in Peru. The students were given a variety of materials to create and design their own masks. These will be painted next week using metallic acrylic.
We have been doing "listen to reading" during our Daily 5 Read to Self block of time. We access BookFlix through the BGRS engaging students website.
Thank you to this week's Student of the Week for the story and delicious cupcakes!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!
