Flight of the Butterflies

We ended our week with a special treat! We joined 3A and 3C to watch the movie Flight of the Butterflies. It ties in well with the exciting transformation that is happening in our classroom!

The chrysalises formed and we carefully moved them into the butterfly habitat to wait for them to emerge. We did have an "escapee" caterpillar who formed his chrysalis on the outside of the bin. The students thought this was pretty amazing but had to be very careful not to disturb him before moving him safely into the habitat.

In Language Arts, we have been working on our All About Me project. The students are working through writing, editing, publishing and illustrating their paragraphs. We are proud of the effort they are putting into this activity.

We also completed a Making Words activity where the mystery word was "Chrysalis". Together, we were able to fill our sheet with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 letter words.

We completed a couple reading passages together as a class and answered various grammar and comprehension questions related to the reading. One story was called The Giant Hairy Toe and the other was called Teacher Boy.

We have been reading through the "Collections" series. The students have also been using this series for buddy reading.

We now know how to form the letter Ff in cursive writing. We are nearing the end of the list of letters in the alphabet, so we have been able to spell many interesting words.

We continue to work though the "5 minute daily review" and this week the focus was on nouns and verbs. Please ask your child to tell you what they know about nouns and verbs.

In Math, we completed our unit on Measurement and began our unit on Division. The students have been dividing items into smaller groups by "sharing" items in equal groups. They have also looked at how a division sentence can be rewritten as an addition sentence.

In Science we have been working through our Butterfly book. We completed the Life Cycle - Stage Four - Butterfly page. We also discussed the difference between "facts" and "opinions" and completed that page in our booklet too.

Some of our sunflowers have SPROUTED!!!

The grade 1 class from across the hall came to read with us this week. The students all enjoyed the reading time and took turns sharing their books.

We used a variety of colours and finished our pointillism art project. They turned out beautiful and were put up in the gym for the Volunteer Appreciation afternoon.

Thank you to our Student of the Week for the book and special treat this week!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!
