HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

The students had a wonderful afternoon celebrating Valentine's Day with their classmates. They handed out special cards to their friends, played a few "Minute to Win It" games and enjoyed some delicious snacks. Thank you to all of the families who contributed to our party!

We completed a Valentine's Day "making words". The students were given the "mystery word" and had to create smaller words from the letters. We then worked together to share and complete the chart.

Our focus in Language Arts this week was pulling out key information in non-fiction reading passages. We read a selection from our Collection series about ocean animals. We stopped frequently to discuss the important information from each paragraph.

We also worked through a power point presentation teaching us about how snowflakes are formed. Each student had their own copy of the passage. As we read it together, we stopped to highlight key words or parts of sentences. Then they worked on placing the key information or "jot notes" into a graphic organizer. A lot of our students have shown an interest in working on research projects so it is important for them to be able to pull out important points in order to create their own sentences.

We also practiced for our Spell-a-thon test. The students worked on word search activities and Spelling City.

We had our Spell-a-thon test on Thursday and ALL of the students did well! We had 7 students that got 100% and many that were very close! Awesome job practicing and reviewing the words at home! Please make sure money is turned in by Wednesday, in order to be entered into the draws.

We also had time to do another handwriting letter...Jj. The students continue to love handwriting and are eager to see who's name we can spell with the letters we've learned.

In Math, we worked on addition and subtraction word problems. We focused on reading through the problem and circling or underlining the numbers and key words, such as "in total" or "more than". Our POW this week is a word problem that has the students both adding and subtracting with regrouping.

This week in Social, we flew to Tunisia. We started learning about life in the city and the country. We also read about celebrations, the culture, the customs and traditions in Tunisia. We are reading the text book together and then making point form information sheets ("jot notes") about what we learn. After we finish learning about the culture in Tunisia, the students will work on group projects to demonstrate what they have learned.

Read to Self continues to be an important part of our day. This activity takes place the last block of the day. The students spend the time reading a book at their reading level, while we read with individual students one on one.

Congratulations to our super reader this week! He read over 2400 minutes, making it to Ukraine!

We continue to write in our Back and Forth books each Friday. The students really enjoy reading the comments you write back to them! Please keep in mind that these ideas are their own unedited work and you should be seeing progress from the beginning of the year. Capitals, periods and complete sentences are encouraged.

We headed to the rink for another week of skating. The students enjoyed tag games, noodle hockey and skating around with their classmates. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers. We REALLY appreciate all of the help we had on and off the ice!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!

We ended the week with a performance by Garth Prince. Garth is an African Vocalist, Singer-Songwriter and Music Teacher. He taught the students an African song titled Dumela Kaufela. The students were very engaged and enjoyed learning a bit about his culture as well!
