Seuss Day!

We celebrated Dr.Seuss' birthday this week. We spent some time with 1B doing a directed drawing of Cat in the Hat and then took turns reading Dr.Seuss books.
We also took part in Superhero and Character Day! We had a lot of different costumes!

This week in Language Arts, we worked on our trading cards by researching Tunisian animals. The students looked up information about appearance, habitat, prey and then had the opportunity to choose a few interesting facts.

During "Read to Self" time the students tested out the "whisper phone". They enjoyed reading to each other using this device.

In Math, we learned different strategies to solve three digit subtraction questions. Students were able to use manipulatives, a number line or the stacking method.
After completing their work, they played a three digit subtraction game called "Race to Zero".

In Social, we read about the environment in Tunisia. We learned about the climate and different regions within that country.

We also read about leaders and community in Tunisia. The students highlighted key information on flash card strips and put them into their lap books.

Students were given their fourth Survivor challenge. We now have food and shelter but the rain has started to come down quickly! It is beginning to make puddles around our sleeping area. We need to raise our sleeping area so that it is not on the soaked ground. We decide to head back to the plane to grab another piece of tin. It won't be the softest place to sleep but at least we will be dry and out of the puddles. We need to figure out how we are going to raise the tin above the ground. We find some nearby tree stumps. Should we use one large pillar in the centre or four smaller pillars in each of the four corners of the tin floor! The students found that four pillars distributed the weight more evenly and would be the better choice to support our floor.

Students also completed their fifth challenge this week. Now that our shelter was dry and off the ground, we decided we needed some furnishings for our new home. We decided to make a table and headed back to the plane for something to use as a table top. For the base of the table, we need to create a pillar that will support the table top and additional weight. We will have to test the different pillar shapes, triangular, cylindrical, and rectangular.

Congratulation to our students this week who flew to a new country!
