The students also completed a reading comprehension test on a level "n" story. We read the story together as a class and then the students answered questions based on what was read.
We went to visit our little grade one friends this week to check out their leprechaun traps. Unfortunately none of them were able to catch him but we heard he stole a few shiny objects and some chocolate coins!
In Language Arts this week, we learned about limericks. We spent time brainstorming rhyming words and talked about syllables. Each student wrote their own leprechaun limerick. They presented the poems on a pot of gold.
We also started illustrating our published "Three Little Pig" stories. The students are all taking their time and doing a wonderful job.
We spent some time preparing for our Spell-a-thon test. We learned a new game called Battleship, completed a word search and played a class game of Wordo.
We continue to write in our Journals every week. Recently they have been given specific topics to write about. This week they were asked what they would do if they found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
We started our Measurement unit in Math. To launch the unit we read "Measuring Penny".
We talked about standard and non-standar units. The students used a pendulum as a non-standard unit to measure the passage of time. One student would complete activities such as drawing a snowman, putting on their shoes, and counting by 5s to 50 while the other timed them.
We completed another challenge in Survivor. We have had horrible luck with the weather on the island. A hurricane is headed our way!!! We have three days to reinforce our shelter and the furniture we have made. We have a lot of experimenting to do with a variety of materials and only three days to get it done! We need to work together as a team so that we can reinforce our living space before the hurricane hits.
The class was really excited to have earned another "golden garbage can" certificate at this week's assembly! The students work hard to make sure our class is left neat and tidy for Miss Betty.
We have now completed our study of Tunisia and celebrated on Friday, with our second cultural day! The students had the opportunity to sample Tunisian food (couscous, baklava, dates and flat bread with olive oil). They also rotated through a weaving station, a bean craft, a Tunisian game called Mankala and had the opportunity to trade their Tunisian animal cards with their classmates. It was a great afternoon!
