Happy Valentine's Day!!!

The class prepared for Valentine's Day by  creating monster mailboxes. They really had fun with this project!

On Friday, we celebrated friendship by playing games, enjoying snacks and exchanging valentines. Thank you to the parents who sent in food for our celebration!

The school also participated in Jump Rope for Heart. The students rotated through a variety of stations during their gym block.
We had another great week at the rink! Thank you to all of the parents who came to skate with the class and helped tie skates!
In Language Arts, we continued writing our spin off stories of the "Three Little Pigs". We brainstormed "instead of said" words for them to use in their writing.
We also read and discussed the final 2 stories from our Collections series on Fairytales. The students have enjoyed all of the stories in this reader. We will begin a new one next week.
The students had the opportunity to do some extra spelling practice on the chrome books. They love the different games available on Spelling City. The link to this site is on our blog. Please ask your child to show you it.

We started 3 digit addition this week in Math. The students had the opportunity so share their own strategies of how to add two 3 digit numbers.
We also did some extra practice with stacking.

We had many students fly on to new countries this week! We encourage you to continue reading with your children so they can travel around the world in the Amazing Race!
For art this week, we talked about warm and cool colours on the colour wheel. We created a Valentines themed drawing and used warm colours for the heart and cool for the background. The students enjoyed using oil pastels for this project.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!

Winter Walk

It was a beautiful day to participate in our school wide winter walk. We joined up with 1A and walked the route through Devon. We came back to the school to enjoy hot chocolate and timbits from Tim Hortons.
On Tuesday we had a special performance ~ "Early Bloomer".
"Maisy Daisy faces the embarrassing and exciting challenges of blossoming a little sooner than her pals. With the help of Principal Gardener, her parents and her fellow daisies, Maisy figures out how to stand tall, be proud and discover a new found be-leaf in herself! It is a sweet and funny look at puberty that celebrates the uniqueness and awkwardness of every young person’s journey to become a young adult."
For gym this week, we played soccer with 3D.
In Math, we discussed different mental math strategies to use when solving addition questions. The students shared their favourite method with the class.
We also played a new game called "Around the World" to practice their basic math facts of addition and subtraction! This is a fast paced game that the whole class enjoys playing together.

In Language Arts, we read another story from our collections series. The Finding Princess had a great moral and the students loved the discussion we had about it. Ask your child to share with you what made the princess truly happy.
We started writing our spin off stories of the "Three Little Pigs". We have been working on this in sections so that we can focus on building a good sequenced story. After each section the students conference with us to edit their work. We will continue writing these stories next week.

For handwriting, we did the letter Zz and then we reviewed the decending letters.

We continue to complete a weekly Morning Message. Students copy a short paragraph containing many spelling mistakes and missing punctuation. We recently started unscrambling words. After we have corrected the paragraph, we count the number of mistakes, making this our mystery number for the day. We then use this number to play "How Many Ways" where students come up with math equations that equal our mystery number. This week, we added 100 to our mystery number (28) to give the students a challenge. It looks like a few of them are ready for multiplication!

Over the year, the students work on a monthly "memory" page for their portfolios. They use a Google slide document to create memory pages for each month. The students worked on their January pages this week. They have become very familiar with font, text size, changing colour, adding background colour and resizing pictures. We have been compiling their completed pages into their portfolio and they will become a great keepsake of their grade 3 year.

Beach Day...

This week, we celebrated the sun and sand by dressing up for Beach Day!
In Language Arts this week, we started looking at the components of a story. We read different versions and spin off stories of the "Three Little Pigs". We talked about the similarities and differences in the characters, setting, problem and solution. As a class, we created story maps for each of the stories.

Students then used a story map to jot down ideas for their own story.

We have now finished all of the letters of the alphabet in handwriting. The students  will be doing a bit of review before we start writing sentences.
In Math, we continued learning about addition. The students learned how to round to the nearest ten. They also started adding two digit numbers, using base ten blocks to demonstrate an understanding of making groups of tens.
To practice their basic facts, they played a game called Addition Battle.
The students finished their Survivor title page in Science.
Throughout the building unit, the students will be asked to complete various experiments. To launch the unit we discussed what a fair test was. The class was given a short activity which didn't end up being fair for all students in our room. We talked about why the activity wasn't fair and what makes a fair test. We then completed our first challenge. There was an earthquake on our island and the students needed to construct a bridge to cross the crevice. The students created a square bridge and an arch bridge and tested the load it would hold. We learned that the arch bridge holds more as the mass is distributed evenly and there are no pressure points.

In Social, we learned about the Tunisian coat of arms. We talked about the symbols and the meaning of justice, order and freedom. The students then coloured the coat of arms for the front of their lapbook.
Congratulations to another one of our students who flew to India this week by reading 1200 minutes!
We also had a student complete the amazing race and is now flying around for a SECOND time!!
