Final Swimming Week

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as cooperative this week for swimming but the kids were troopers! They swam hard to keep warm and enjoyed a few minutes of free time on the diving board at the end of their lessons. We will  have a break from swimming now but we will be doing some free swim at the end of the month.

This week we also were lucky enough to attend the JMHS Drama Troupe performance of Newsies! It was very well done and although it was 2 hours long, our class was a respectful audience to the young performers.

The students worked on writing a good ending/resolution and have now completed the rough copy of their fractured fairy tales. We will be spending some time next week typing them up. The students used good descriptive words and a variety of dialogue. We are excited to read their published stories!

We read from our Collections series during our reading block. After reading, My Wish for Tomorrow, the students completed a page about their own Wish for Tomorrow. There were many thoughtful ideas.

To go along with our Science unit on Life Cycles, we have been reading about the life cycles of various animals. We are also working through a Life Cycle booklet and have been watching videos and doing activities that relate.

We have been carefully watching and recording the changes our caterpillars are making. They have now been transported to our net enclosure and are hanging as chrysalis. This stage will last from 7 - 10 days, so we hope to have butterflies sometime next week.

We are also patiently waiting for all of our sunflowers to sprout!

In Math, we have been working through our Measurement unit. The students were introduced to measuring in non-standard and standard units. They estimated the length of different objects using cubes, their fingers and their hand. They also were taught how to properly use a ruler and measure in centimeters. They are all very excited for the POW activity this week and should be busy measuring footsteps around the house!

A few students were decked out in their best western wear! Western Day came just in time to celebrate Devon Days next week, with the theme being "Wild, Wild West"!

The students learned about symmetry and worked on finishing their butterflies using pointillism.

Thank you so much to our Student of the Week for the delicious treat! It was perfect for our ONE hot day this week!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
