Bridge Workshop...

Thanks to Peter Caron, we had a great opportunity this week to learn all about the construction of different bridges. The students were taught all of the different shapes that can be found in a variety of bridge types. He brought four types with him, an arch, beam, cantilever and suspension bridge. The  students had the chance to construct the bridges with their group. They had to work together as a team and do a lot of problem solving in order to build the bridge properly. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who came to help supervise the construction!

The Spell-a-thon is quickly approaching so we started the week with a "pre-test". This gave the students a good idea of what words they need to work on at home. We also spent some class time working through activities to help the students study, focusing on ten different words each day.

Scrabble Spelling-each letter of the alphabet is assigned a certain number and the students add up the total of a given word.

Pyramid Spelling-the students make a pyramid using a word by starting with a letter and adding one each time.

Wordsearch

We read "The Luckiest Leprechaun" by Justine Korman. As we read through the book, we stopped and made a list of St. Patrick's day themed words that we will be using in our writing over the next two weeks.

Then we talked about what makes up a limerick poem. The students worked on using syllables and rhyming words. Next week the students will type them so they can be displayed for Student Led Conferences.

We are close to half way through "Charlie and the Chocolate" factory. The students are really enjoying this novel and letting their imaginations grow as they think about what it would be like to be Charlie. We frequently stop to discuss new vocabulary words and what is happening in the story. The students also love making predictions about what they think the next chapter will be about.

The students have started working on their typing skills by using "Typing Club" each morning. They have all started to use home row and will progress to harder typing skills as they spend more time using the program.

In Math, the students worked on their skip counting skills, in order to prepare them for multiplication. We worked through skip counting by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10!

Survivor Challenges...

Good job testing the strength of the tree leaves! Jayla and Lilly have wandered off, in search of Aryss' shoes. Luckily, in their travels, they were able to locate a fresh drinking water source. Kayden and Christian have headed back to the plane to find any containers to store the fresh water in. However, our fresh water supply is limited, so we need to test the bottles to determine which will be the best to store our water safely. The shape of the container will affect its stability.

Conclusion- Containers that are shorter and have a wider base are more stable.

(We did a class demonstration to show the stability of containers by slowly tilting the desk to see which containers tipped over first.)

We have had horrible luck with the weather on this island. A hurricane is headed our way! We have three days to reinforce our shelter and the furniture we have made. We have a lot of experimenting to do with a variety of material and only three days to get it done! Let's work together as a team so that we can reinforce our living space before the hurricane hits!!!

To conclude our Survivor challenges, the students will be spending a few classes testing different materials to join objects together. This week they were given 12 straws and asked to make a cube using plasticine, pipe cleaners and paper clips. After the three different cubes were built, the students tested the strength of the 3D shape. They found that the plasticine was the strongest material to make a straw cube.

In PE this week, the students worked on their floor hockey skills. We practiced running while keeping possession of the puck, passing and shooting. The students also enjoyed a few scrimmages.

We also completed a special project with Ms. Angell, Technology Integration Facilitator for Black Gold Schools. The students used a program on their chrome books to complete sound waves of their names. After they took a screenshot of their name, they used a program to add a background, border and text to their sound waves. These turned out so well!!

For Art, the students were given a St. Patrick's Day craft. They had specific instructions to follow in order to complete the craft properly.

Here are the Amazing Race readers this week!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
