In Language Arts this week, the students started off by writing about their two week holiday in their Journals. Then we talked about the New Year and the meaning of a resolution. We read "Squirrel's New Year's Resolution" and the students shared different things that they would like to do this year. Then they worked on their own to fill out an activity sheet.
The students used these ideas to write a paragraph about 2018. They worked on an introduction and conclusion sentence, creating different sentence starters and adding details. After editing their writing, they copied the paragraph and it was placed on a balloon to display around the room. The students love seeing themselves floating with their balloon around our classroom!
We completed the letter "Ll" in our cursive writing books.
This week we focused on penguins during our daily read aloud block. We read a non-fiction book about these cute creatures and the students had an opportunity to spend some time on the chrome books watching videos to learn more facts.
In Math, we covered the following concepts...
1. Adding with and without regrouping using two-digit numbers and the standard algorithm (stacking tens/ones).
2. Regrouping both ones and tens column.
3. Making a hundred by regrouping the tens.
The also learned a new game called Slam Dunk to reinforce two digit addition.
In Social, the students created their own passports for our trip to each country. They filled out their own information and coloured the coat of arms on the front. They also had their passport pictures taken. It was hard for some of them not to smile but we had so much fun!
We continued reading about India, comparing life in the city and country. We also read about festivals and special holidays. The students took turns reading and then added facts to their booklets.
In Phys. Ed. we worked on gymnastics. They students worked through some strength and balance activities. We also played a few games which required a lot of running! They had some energy to burn after being stuck inside all day!
We continued our penguin theme by watching "Happy Feet" while the kids ate lunch which also went along with our Art project this week. The students did a directed drawing of a penguin and coloured them using chalk pastels. The students were taught how to blend black, shades of grey and white. It was a messy project but they turned out very cute! For the horizon, the students used watercolour paints. They were taught how to blend the colours by adding more water.
Two of our students moved on in our reading program. One of them received a rocket by reading 3600 minutes. She is now on her second lap of the Amazing Race! Way to go!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!
