As a school, we collected over 2000 donations!!! The generosity this year will be much appreciated by the families within our community who are needing a little extra help this holiday season. On Friday, we presented the donations to Kammi Rosentreter, from the Devon Christmas Elves. It was an exciting but very emotional presentation and a lot of the students really got a good sense of how it feels to give to others.
After the presentation, the grade 3 students headed over the the Christmas Elves depot to deliver and help sort all 2000 items. They students LOVED being part of this! A huge thank you to bus driver Amy who donated her bus and time to help us safely transport all of the items.
The students came to school this week and received a special surprise from the North Pole! We were so happy to welcome our own Elf on the Shelf! The elf will definitely enjoy his time in our class with this wonderful group of students. We don't think he will have anything to report to Santa except positive things about our class.
He also brought with him an advent calendar with candy canes. The student's names are chosen randomly from the container and they get to enjoy the candy cane that day!
The students received a journal called "Elf on the Shelf Morning Report". Every morning the students will be writing a little report and adding an illustration showing where the elf is sitting for the day. For practice, we watched a step by step video on how to draw "Buddy".
Here is the link if your child would like to draw at home...
As a class reward, the students watched "An Elf's Story" and enjoyed a special treat!
In Language Arts, we continued our book study of Polar Express. The students wrote about the characters, setting, problem and solution. They also did an ABC order activity using Polar Express words. Then they thought about what they would want if they could have the first gift of Christmas and then wrote about it in paragraph format, using a topic sentence, details and a concluding sentence.
The students also wrote a rough draft letter to the jolly guy up North. They were taught the proper format of a friendly letter and what kinds of things should be included. The students introduced themselves, told Santa how they have been good this year, made a request for a special gift and then asked him a few questions about cookies, Mrs. Claus or his reindeer. They will work on their good copies next week and then they will be sent to the North Pole. We are hoping to receive letters back before Christmas break.
In Math, we covered the following outcomes...
1. Using place value to say if a number is 10 (or 100) more (or less) than another number.
2. Adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from a number.
3. Completing number patterns that increase or decrease by 10 or 100.
The students also wrote a quiz this week covering the last two weeks of outcomes.
We completed a few "How Many Ways" activities. The students are becoming more confident in their ability to do mental math and come up with more challenging equations to present to the class.
We concluded our Hearing and Sound unit in Science this week. The students were very excited about the instruments they made at home. They presented them to the class and the directors of the orchestra (us). They were assessed on their ability to demonstrate and explain what family their instrument is from, how the sound is made, how to change the volume (loud and soft) and how to change the pitch (high and low). Then they had the opportunity to play a little "tune" for us to enjoy.
Our students always look forward to spending a bit of time with their buddies. They are impressed with how the grade ones have progressed in their reading.
We know this is a busy time of the year and evenings are filled with concerts and other family outings but please try to fit in a bit of reading before bedtime each night!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
