Scarecrow Art...

Last week, the students completed a directed draw of a scarecrow for our watercolour project. We started by adding some straw with crayon and talked about "crayon resist". The students then experimented with making lighter and darker colours by adding more water or more paint. They worked on brush stroke technique and blending. We have a great group of little artists who like to take their time to complete wonderful pieces of art.

We were excited to read all about the student's Thanksgiving weekend with their family and friends. We started journal writing with some planning time and then the students wrote about how they spent their weekend.

The students used their new spelling lists this week to complete the "Write and Draw" activity. This activity gives the students the opportunity to show the meanings of words visually. If the students do not know the definition of words, we have been using Google to help them. We are trying to get our hands on a few dictionaries to teach them how to find words the "old fashion way". We know this is no longer a way to find the definition of words, but believe it or not, some kids "these days" actually think the "old" ways are fun.
Our Making Words activity this week was made up of the letters ...
A, E, O, R, C, S, W, R, C
The mystery word was "scarecrow"!

In Language Arts this week we continued our class read aloud. We are impressed with how confident the students are becoming to volunteer to read to the class. This week we read, "Cinderella Around the World", "The Hare and the Tortoise" and "The Extraordinary Cat". The students are really enjoying this fairy tale collection and the "spin off" stories.

The following link is to an excellent site if you need some ideas for helping your young reader at home.

We completed two more cursive writing letters. Cc and Ii have now been added to the list of letters our students are able to form in handwriting.

In Math, we continued to work on understanding and creating pattern rules.
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28    Start at 4. Add 4 each time.

Next week we will be moving on to addition 6 in Mad Minutes. If your child needs some extra practice, please send a note in their agenda and we will gladly send home a few sheets.

In Social we continued to work on mapping skills. The students learned about the compass and how it works. We headed outside to figure out directions in relation to our school. Then we brainstormed different landmarks in Devon.

We also talked about how mapmakers draw the symbols they use in a map key and how the map key tells what each symbol stands for. The students then had to work through drawing a key to match the map symbols.

Maps that show the form of the land are called Landform Maps. The students discussed definitions for lake, river, plateau, mountain, valley and plains and then they coloured a Landform Map following the key and directions.

For Physical Education the students worked through a variety of centers, exploring different equipment around the Gym.

We had one more super reader this week who reached 600 minutes. Way to go!

Our Student of the Week had the opportunity to share about his special pets and a beautiful blanket made by his Oma.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
