Happy Thanksgiving!

Our class has been doing so well getting accustomed to our daily routines and the expectations of our classroom. Monday morning always begins with their weekly Spelling Pretest and Journal "free write. We really enjoy reading their Journals. The students usually write about the events that took place on the weekend, but sometimes we will get stories about their pets or special family outings that they are looking forward to during the week. At certain points throughout the year, the students may get a writing prompt for their Journals so that we can review and work through proper paragraph format.

The students always look forward to reading the short stories in our Collections series. Reading together as a class allows everyone to be included in their own way, while still learning about reading with fluency and expression. We also stop at unknown words to sound them out as a class and sometimes need to Google the definition of the words within the stories. We talk about what is happening in the story and make predictions about what we think is going to happen next.

Our Grade 3 students really look forward to Buddy Reading with the Grade 1 class across the hall.

We have been spending a lot of time creating quality sentences. This week we worked on adding adjectives to create "juicy" sentences.

We completed a Making Words activity. The students are getting really good at coming up with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 letter words with the letters they are given. After working on their own, they get together with a partner to share words and create new ones. Then we gather as a class and compile one list together. The mystery word for this week was THANKSGIVING!

We also brainstormed, as a class, different things we are thankful for. They then chose their top 10, or used their own to create a Word Art turkey on the Black Gold engaging students site.

In Math, we continued our work with increasing and decreasing number patterns. The students also worked on making "pattern rules" and had a short quiz. We have been sending the quizzes home without the corrections done hoping they will correct their mistakes at home with you so that you can see where they are needing a bit of help.

For example...4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19  Start at 4 and add 3 each time.

We also had some time to play Tic Tac Twelve. The students really enjoy this game!

They have been enjoying time on the chrome books exploring Mathletics. Just a reminder that the students can access this website from home. The username and password is in their agendas.

We finished our Rocks and Minerals unit in Science with a Rock Talk. The students had the opportunity to bring two rocks from home or choose two rocks from their collection at school. They shared their rocks with the class talking about where they found the rock and different properties such as colour, size, texture and hardness.

We began our first unit in Social Studies. This unit is a Mapping unit and this week we talked about the difference between a map and a globe. We also discussed the compass rose and its importance in accurately telling direction.

We had two students who took their first flight by reading 600 minutes. Way to go! We hope you enjoy your trip around the world.

We really enjoyed The Thankful Book that Ms. Caudron read us this week during our library class. Each week the students go to library on Thursday and are encouraged to take out a picture book and a book that is at their reading level. We encourage you to read to your child as this helps model fluency and expression.

For Art this week, we created 2 projects. We began our watercolour scarecrow art with a directed draw. We have a group of amazing artists this year and they all turned out fabulous!! Next week, we will add the watercolour to complete the project.

We also completed pumpkin Zentangles. This is a process where an abstract drawing in created using repetitive patterns. This method is known to create focus and creativity.

Our Student of the Week had some time on Friday to share with the class. The students were very respectful listeners as she shared some current events and some of her favourite things.

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!
