Fred Penner Concert

A big thank you to Mrs. Stanski for organizing such a great field trip for the Grade 1-4 students. It was a wonderful opportunity to see Fred Penner in concert. Our "Robina Baker" section enjoyed every minute of the show and you could hear the children's voices as they sang along. It was very obvious that our music teacher practiced the songs with the students.

Thank you to our volunteers! We secretly think they enjoyed the concert just as much, if not more, than the students!

Our school also took part in the Bus Safety program this week. The Grade 3's were quizzed on their safety knowledge with a very fun game. Then we all went out to the bus and practiced an evacuation.

This week in Language Arts, we started a new writing project based on the book, "I Need My Monster".

Here is a video of the book, if you are interested in watching it with your child.

I Need My Monster Video

We talked about juicy words, or adjectives, that we could use to describe a monster and completed a "fill in the blank" activity with the students.

The students also coloured the cover page for their "I Need My Monster" project.

We spent some time looking at the awesome illustrations in the book while using juicy words to describe the monsters. We encouraged the students to be creative and expand their vocabulary so that their writing is interesting to read. For example...instead of using the word "big" we could use humongous, huge, enormous, gigantic!

Then we used our imaginations to create a class monster. This activity was used as an example before the students were left to design the monster that lives under their own bed.

We then began the process of describing our monsters in a web format. The parts of their monster were broken down and together we created a web with detailed, juicy words to describe each aspect.

The students completed another Making Words activity using the letters... i, e, e, a, p, p, p, l, n
The mystery word this week was PINEAPPLE.

Every week, the students look forward to Buddy Reading. They enjoy reading aloud to the Grade Ones. This is a great way for the students to gain confidence in their reading and work on their fluency and expression if they aren't quite ready to read in front of their peers.

In Math, the students learned about columns and rows in order to recognized patterns in different number charts. They also continued to work on describing and creating pattern rules.

In Social, we talked about how the scale on a map works and the relationship between the distance on paper compared to the actual distance on land. The students were taught how to use a ruler to measure the distance on a map and convert this to kms. The map they were using had a scale of 1cm=100km

We learned about continents and oceans by watching a short video. The students coloured and labelled a map of the world and looked at the continents around the world in relation to where we live.

We then zoomed in to focus on the continent we live on. The students learned about the countries by colouring and creating a key.

We continued working through a number of different cooperative games in phys. ed. with a focus on throwing and catching.

Congratulations! We had a few students fly to new countries this week!
