In Science, we started experimenting with our collection of rocks. We studied different properties and compared the rock samples. First they looked at the physical properties of the rocks and decided whether they were shiny, dull, rough, smooth, big, little and if it had a bit of sparkle.
They measured the length of their rocks.
We used vinegar to see if the rocks bubbled. If they saw bubbles, their rock most likely contained calcium carbonate.
They tested the hardness of their rocks using a nail, penny and their fingernail.
They also tested their rocks to see if they floated or sank.
In Social, we talked about the 7 continents. We also discussed where the 5 Amazing Race pit stops are, that the students will make in our home reading program.
We coloured the continents and learned the names of the oceans.
We also did a "Making Words" activity with the mystery word...CONTINENT! The students worked in pairs to think of as many words they could with those letters.
We also read a story called Ivan and the All-Stars. Ask your child to retell the events that happened in this story, from Ivan wanting to be a "star", to eventually enjoying baseball and being part of a team.
After reading "Billy's World", the class looked through the story to find compound words.
For extra spelling practice, we pulled out the alphabet stamps, bubber, magazine letters, alphabet magnets and whiteboards.
Our morning message this week contained 20 errors. Boy did the students come up with some tricky math statements to reflect the number 20!
We had bus safety on Friday morning. The students were challenged during a game of Jeopardy. Then we headed outside to the bus to practice an emergency evacuation.
During Art this week, the students designed their own rocks. Next week we will be adding a few details.
We had 3 students from our class participate in the Cross Country meet. Great job guys!!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!
