Christmas Concert...

This week was full of concert practice and rehearsals in the gym. The students performed on Tuesday afternoon for the school and a few visitors. On Tuesday evening, our class arrived at school with their beautiful singing voices and in their best concert attire. They did so well and we were very proud of them. After the concert, parents and children enjoyed visiting with friends while they sipped hot chocolate, which was donated by Tim Hortons and munched on cookies baked by the RBES staff.

In Language Arts this week, we reviewed the first half of the words from our Word Wall Word list. The students were given a pre-test on Monday so they would know which words they should be studying for their test on Friday. Next week, we will be working on the second half of our Word Wall Word list.

Our students LOVE going to library to choose new books to read for the week! They are always so eager to sit down to look through the new books they have picked out. Please make sure that library books are returned by the following Wednesday of each week, so new books can be chosen.

We also wrote letters to Santa. As a class, we developed a letter together, separating it into three different paragraphs. We wrote a paragraph introducing ourselves, one explaining why we have been good this year and the last paragraph contained questions for Santa. We printed off the typed rough copies and decided that Santa would love to see our super neat grade 3 printing. After we finished printing our letters, we coloured the pictures on the letter for Santa. We will copy these letters for their memory books and then mail them next week, in hopes to hear back from the North Pole before Christmas break begins.

In Math, the students completed a quiz reviewing base ten blocks. They also had to demonstrate their understanding of ordering and comparing numbers up to 999. We also did -3 mad minutes this week.

We continued learning about the culture in India. This week we learned about India's Environment and the four regions in India (desert, mountains, plateau and plains).
Next Friday we will conclude our unit by rotating through the Grade 3 classrooms to participate in a number of activities. Please make sure you have completed the Power School payment online. The cost is $8 and this includes supplies and food for all four of the culture days we will be hosting throughout the school year. Thank you!

On Friday, we invited one of the organizers of the Devon Christmas Elves, Kammi Rosentreter, to our assembly. A few of the Grade 3 students introduced her to the students and staff of RBES. We presented her with close to 900 items that were donated by our wonderful RBES families. The Grade 3 students then packed up all of the donations to get it ready to deliver. Since the weather this week hasn't been the warmest, one of our bus drivers, Amy, donated her time and bus to help us deliver all of the food and toys to the depot. When we arrived at the depot, Kammi showed the students how everything was organized so the students could help sort all of the donations. The students had a great time and loved lending a helping hand.

Art for the next few weeks will be "TOP SECRET"!!!

Way to go! Here are the students who flew to new countries this week!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!

Wow! December Already!!!

Wow! The year has flown by and we are now in our final month of 2016! We celebrated the start of December with a couple fun class traditions. The tree is up and the students had a chance to each place an ornament! We also have a class advent calendar, where a different name will be chosen from a box to open and enjoy the chocolate for the day.

For Language Arts this week, we worked on a writing assignment given by the Devon Dispatch. The students were asked to think about a favourite Christmas memory, tradition or something they are looking forward to this season. They needed to complete a typed response in 50 words or less. They worked on these in "google docs" and were introduced to the tool "word count" in order to keep their writing under 50 words.

In Math, we continued working on regrouping hundreds, tens and ones. The students had to fill in equations like 5 hundreds+2 tens = _____hundreds+12 tens, They are able to draw out the numbers on whiteboards, scrap paper or use base ten blocks are manipulatives to build these numbers. We also have opportunities to play math games using a deck of cards. Ask your child to teach you one!

In Social, we are still working on our India Travel Journal. We have been reading about Ravi and the community he lives in. We learned about how decisions are made in India and the services available there. We discussed and compared this to what is offered here, in our community.

We have been practicing a lot for our Christmas Concert which is next week. The grade 3/4 concert will be on Tuesday night. We hope to see you all there. Please email us if you are unable to make it, as we would have to change up our order for the risers.

We added some glitter to the very cute Rudolph art that was made last week. Mrs. Kloschinsky asked for these to be displayed on the bulletin board in the gym. Please look for them when you come to the concert!

We continue to have many eager Home Readers, who continue to fly around the world.
