COLD, short week!

The cold weather didn't stop Robina Baker from participating in Winter Walk Day. The students put on their toques and mittens and enjoyed a few laps around the school hallways.

Even though the students were cooped up all week, they enjoyed their indoor recesses.

In Language Arts, we started a "Friend" poetry project. We started by reading the story "Don't Need Friends" by Carolyn Crimi. We discussed what kind of qualities make a good friend; honesty, kindness, giving and caring.

Then we looked at the poem "Friends" by Jessica Crum. One word from each stanza was covered and the students completed an activity called "Guess the Covered Word". The students used whiteboards and by using context clues, tried to figure out what the covered word was. We talked about the different words that they came up with, making sure they looked right, sounded right and made sense in the stanza. They each got a copy of the poem to glue into their project folder.

The students were given a graphic organizer to brainstorm what they like to do with their friends. After coming up with twelve ideas, they shared their organizer with a peer and picked their top four.

We read a few selections from our Collections series. We talked about the difference between non-fiction and fiction and were refreshed on how to use a table of contents.

In Math, we continued working on number patterns. This week we worked on extending patterns that count by 5 or 10.

We completed one Survivor challenge in Science.

Thanks to your great work, we no longer have to sleep on the hard ground...in the monsoon!
Now that the shelter is done, we need to furnish our living quarters. Every house needs a table. We will need to return to the plane to find something we can use for a table top. For the base of the table, we will need to create a pillar that will support the table top and additional weight. The difficulty will be choosing which shape of pillar to use.  We will test pillar shapes which are triangular, cylindrical or rectangular.  We will conduct a fair test to discover which pillar shape can hold the most weight.

Our conclusion: The cylindrical shape holds the most mass because it doesn't have edges and the weight is distributed evenly.

We worked on an Art project to prepare and decorate for the upcoming occasion. The students started by sketching a tree and then used Sharpie to colour it in. They learned how to cut hearts from folded paper, using this for their tree outline. Then they used different shades of red and pink to create a colourful heart tree. They focused on creating balance on their tree by spreading out their colours evenly around the branches.

Here are the amazing readers for the week!!!
