Oil Kings Game!!!

Well, Friday night was certainly exciting! The students looked forward to the Oil Kings game all week and they all had an amazing time. There was dancing, a lot of cheering, munching on some favourite treats and of course watching our Oil Kings defeat the Red Deer Rebels 2-1! Thank you so much to all of the families who decided to join us for the evening. It was a fun event that will leave lasting memories for all of the kids. We are so glad all of our students have kept up on their home reading so that we had the chance to enter the READING, GIVE IT A SHOT program!

The students at RBES participated in Wellness Day where they rotated through four of the twelve sessions that were offered. Each group of sessions consisted of a food, body, mind and fun filled session.  This is our second Wellness Day. The students will have the opportunity to complete all of the sessions by the end of the year.

In Language Arts, we spent some time practicing for the Spell-a-thon. They worked on a few different strategies to study their words. They completed activities on Spellling City, quizzed each other, completed a word search and worked on a crossword puzzle by connecting letters of different words. We were so proud of their motivation to improve their pre-test score! Way to go, 3B!

We also talked about homophones; words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. The students should know the difference between to, two and too; knew, new; right, write; their, there and they're; threw and through.
We enjoyed reading a few selections from our Collections series. The students are becoming more fluent readers and we have noticed an increase in their confidence when reading in front of their peers.

In Math, we worked on turning repeated addition sentences into a multiplication equation. They also solved multiplication word problems by drawing groups and the number of objects in a group. The students are also able to write multiplication questions for word problems.

We completed three Survivor challenges this week...

Good job testing the strength of tree leaves! Noah and Quinten have wandered off, in search of Sabastion's shoes. Luckily, in their travels, they were able to locate a fresh drinking water source. Gracie and Sashli have headed back to the plane to find any containers to store the fresh water in. However, our fresh water supply is limited, so we need to test the bottles to determine which will be the best to store our water safely. The shape of the container will affect its stability.

Conclusion: Containers that are shorter and have a wider base are more stable.
(We did a class demonstration to show the stability of containers by slowly tilting the desk to see which containers tipped over first.)

We have had horrible luck with the weather on this island. A hurricane is headed our way! We have three days to reinforce our shelter and the furniture we have made. We have a lot of experimenting to do with a variety of material and only three days to get it done! Let's work together as a team so that we can reinforce our living space before the hurricane hits!!!

To conclude our Survivor challenges, the students will be spending a few classes testing different materials to join objects together. This week, they were given 12 straws and asked to make a cube using plasticine, pipe cleaners and paper cilps. After the three different cubes were built, the students tested the strength of the 3D shape. They found that the plasticine was the strongest material to make a straw cube.

They also used 12 toothpicks and made a cube using puffed wheat, marshmallows and plasticine as the connectors. They found that the plasticine made the strongest cube.

In PE this week, the students worked on their kicking, passing and dribbling skills. We completed a few drills and played some games to reinforce the skills.

Wow! We had quite a few students fly to new destinations this week!!!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
