Penguins!

This week, we started a research project about penguins! The students were very excited and it was nice to see how engaged they were while they worked on finding information, organizing facts and planning their presentation.

They started the project by working with a partner and reading information about the Adelie Penguin species. While reading, they highlighted important facts that they could add to their graphic organizer.

Then the students were asked to choose one of the following four penguins for their project; Emperor Penguin, King Penguin, Macaroni Penguin and Little Penguin. They read about their species in their penguin booklets and used the chrome books to find more information. While reading, they filled in the graphic organizer with jot notes about appearance, habitat, food, predators and other interesting facts.

The students were given a lesson on how to use Google Slides in order to create a presentation about their penguin species. They were taught how to make text boxes (changing font and size), adding backgrounds, and inserting images. They also learned how to move things around on their slide to make it easy to read and interesting for the readers. The students worked on making complete sentences with their jot notes and choosing pictures that went with their sentences.

Our spelling list this week was made up of words that go along with our mini penguin unit. The students completed activities such as drawing the meaning, alphabetical order and games on Spelling City.

We practiced cursive writing for the letters K, B and F.

In Math, we worked on rounding to the nearest ten. Numbers that have a ones digit of 5 or more round up to the next multiple of ten. Numbers that have a ones digit of 4, 3, 2, or 1 round down to the previous multiple of ten.

45 rounds up to 50
33 rounds down to 30

The students also worked on estimating by rounding and using a referent.

In Social, we completed our study of the India culture by reading about goods and services, environment and transportation. We also read over some emails from a family member who traveled to India a few years ago. The students loved hearing about his experience and looking at the pictures he had taken. We will be having our first Culture Day on January 25, 2019. The students will be trying Indian food, playing games, getting henna tattoos, bracelets and making Diwali lanterns.

In PE this week, we focused on jumping and proper landings. The students also rotated through a number of different gymnastics stations.

We started working on photo pages for the Grade 3 Memory binders. The students will have access to all of the pictures we have taken throughout the year in order to make scrapbook pages for each month. These are done on the chrome books and will be printed out for their books.

Here are the eager readers who flew this week!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
