Remembrance Day...

RBES students, staff and community members took part in a Remembrance Day assembly. The students came dressed in their best attire to commemorate this special day of remembering.

Thank you so much to James' mom who came in to talk to the class about her husband, Corporal Anthony Reaume, who joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2009, becoming an infantryman with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. In 2011 he completed a 6 month tour in Afghanistan. He currently works at the Base in Edmonton. The students also got a first hand look at some special clips, dog tags and cap badges she brought for them to pass around.

To start off our week, we read the book "A Poppy is to Remember". After discussing the story, the students wrote in their Journals about what they would remember during their moment of silence. We also read a short passage about John McCrae and learned how to highlight important information. After reading it together, the students answered multiple choice questions.

Mrs. Livingstone read a story called "I Am Peace" by Susan Verde. The class had a discussion about what peace means to them and then they made a list of their ideas. The students used these ideas to create a "Peace Is..." poem. They used their chrome books to find a photo that reminded them of peace.

The students worked on short /u/ sounds in Spelling this week. We spend time in class completing activities to help the students work on learning their words and spelling patterns. This week they worked on sorting the words into a chart, filling in missing letters and practiced typing the words on their chrome books. At home, the students should be practicing their words every night and reminded that they have access to Spelling City activities that they can complete at home.

In Math this week the students worked on...
-plotting number on a number line to place them in order
-arranging a list of numbers in ascending and descending order
-recognizing that a two-digit number is less than any three-digit number
-identifying errors in a sequence of numbers in order
-recognizing when two numbers differ by 10 or 100
-using place value to say that one number is 10 (or 100) more (or less) than another
-adding or subtracting 10 or 100
-completing number patterns that increase or decrease by 10 or 100

They also wrote a quiz for lessons 7-10.

We started our new unit in Science this week called "Hearing and Sound". To introduce our unit, Mrs. Livingstone asked the students to think about what life would be like if they lost their sense of hearing. How would they communicate? What other senses would you use to help you? Then she asked the students to close their eyes, listen to different sounds and try to guess what they were hearing; drum, ukulele and balloon. The students then filled out a KWL chart, writing down what they KNOW about hearing and sound and what they WONDER.

Mrs. Livingstone read a story called "Shi-shi-etko" by Nicola I. Campbell. This book was about a little girl who gathers memories by appreciating the things she hears in nature. The students then went on a listening walk to record "indoor" and "outdoor" sounds that they could hear.

The students had the opportunity to use a ruler on the edge of the desk to create sound. They learned that sound is the result of vibration and that pitch (high/low) and volume (loud/soft) are affected by the length of the ruler.

In Art this week, the students looked at some work of a famous artist named Paul Klee and talked about abstract art. They learned about the different ways to make a continuous line by looping, curving and making angles. After drawing their continuous line and going over it with black marker they coloured each shape within the lines.

We were also treated to a special slime making lesson taught by one of our students! The students learned how to measure and mix their own ingredients to make their very own batch of slime.

In PE, the students rotated and worked through a variety of "Throwing and Catching Physical Literacy Centres".

The students were excited to buddy read with the Grade Ones.

Here are the eager readers who flew this week!
