HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
The students came dressed in their favourite costumes to celebrate Halloween! We started the day with our annual RBES parade where everyone had the opportunity to walk around the gym. The students were buzzing with excitement!!!
We enjoyed a story called "Scaredy Cat Splat" by Rob Scotton.
The students prepared for a BINGO game by brainstorming Halloween words. Then they picked their favourite words to add to their game card.
We completed a Mystery Word activity using the letters...aeeinnnkftsr
The students worked together to find 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 letter words. Then they filled in the chart together as a class. It is amazing to see all of the words they can build! The Mystery Word was FRANKENSTEIN!
In the afternoon we played three different Minute to Win It games. The students loved the excitement of being timed to complete the challenging tasks in one minute.
Ghost Poop Pick-up
Smartie Suck-up
Rocket Towers
We played BINGO using the cards they made in the morning. We had quite a few students who were able to choose prizes from our cauldron!
Thank you to all of the parents who sent in food for our party!
In Language Arts this week, the students wrote about Halloween. We talked about the five "W's"; who, what, when, where and why, to give them ideas of what to write about.
We watched the online story of "Winnie the Witch" by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul and then discussed the story elements; characters, setting, problem and main events. They also worked on changing the story by creating their own solution to the problem.
We read a few stories from our Collections series, including a reader's theater. The students loved reading and performing in front of their classmates.
In Math we worked on...
-comparing pairs of one, two and three digit numbers using place value to determine which number is greater
-using words and symbols to compare numbers (<, >, =)
-writing the greatest and least possible numbers from given digits
-plotting numbers on a number line to place them in order
-arranging a list of numbers in ascending or descending order
-recognizing that a two digit number is less than any three digit number
-identifying errors in a sequence of numbers in order
We completed our Mapping and Geography unit in Social Studies by taking a closer look at where some of the cities are located in Alberta in relation to Devon. The students completed a word search finding vocabulary words they learned throughout our unit. Using their knowledge of cardinal directions, they also created a map called Spooky Town by reading and following a set of given instructions.
In PE, we learned a few large group games with a Halloween theme! The students had a great time moving around the gym as ghosts, witches, mummies and black cats.
During Art, we worked on our Christmas card fundraiser. The students used tissue paper and watercolour paint to create their cards. We have sent home a sample of the card (shown below) so that orders can be collected and sent in by Thursday!
Here are the super star readers for the week! WOW!!!
Congratulations to our Student of the Week!
