Wellness Day

This past Friday all RBES students rotated through 4 wellness stations each. The sessions included smoothie making, mindfulness, healthy snack making, yoga, positive affirmations, board games, totem art and play zone. Our class hosted the healthy snack making, which included veggies and dip and fruit and yogurt parfaits!

We also performed at the assembly on Friday. The theme of the month is Nutrition and 3A and 3B sang along to "Food Groups Are Rocking Tonight". They did a wonderful job!

They spent some time talking about the four food groups and wrote about them in their Journals.

We are now finished our novel, Freckle Juice and will be spending a little time this week wrapping up the activities to go along with the reading. The students are completing work on vocabulary, visualizing. comprehension, comparing and contrasting and character descriptions.

We have been working hard on 2 and 3 digit addition, with and without regrouping. The key to being successful with regrouping is to ALWAYS start in the ones column. To help them practice their skills they also learned a new game called Domino Show Down.

In Science, we watched a video on Sound and added to our lapbooks with some vocabulary cards. They also added information about volume, pitch, what sound travels through and how sound moves.

We also completed our Sound Centers. The students rotated through Paper Cup Telephones, Tuning a Glass, Good Vibrations, Sound Traveler, Rubber Band Music, Sounds Good and Ruler Guitar.

Awesome job to our super readers this week!

In gym, we played a target game where the kids had to aim and roll balls to try and get the center balls to the other teams side. It was challenging but a lot of fun!

Congrats to our new Student of the Week!!

Short Week...

This week, Mrs. Livingstone took on the task teaching full time in our class. She has been working with us to plan and organize activities and lessons that she is delivering to the students.

Our Abstract Art was finished up this week and is on display in the hallway.

On Tuesday, the students started off the day writing about their long weekend in their journals. We are beginning to see more details in their writing and proper sentence structure. We encourage the students to write a minimum of 5 sentences but many challenge themselves to write more.

During our Reading Group time, we began our first Novel Study this week. Freckle Juice by Judy Blume has 5 chapters. We are reading one chapter at at time and completing reflection questions, making predictions and doing various activities related to the events in each chapter.

We also began a new writing activity this week. The students will be creating various paragraphs about themselves over the course of the remainder of the year. We hope to see progress in these paragraphs as they learn to add more juicy words and create more detailed sentences. Some of the topics they can write on are: My Family, My Pets, My Favourite Movie and My Hobbies. Their entries will be following the Diary of a Wimpy Kid layout and they will be publishing their work using the chrome books.

In Math, we spent a lot of time on a tricky concept, regrouping ones, tens and hundreds. The students did lessons on the smart board, completed work in their duotangs and used manipulatives to complete some extra practice. The POW this week is based on this concept.

In Science, the students were shown a video to show how sound can travel (through solids, liquids and gases) and that it travels in all directions. We watched the video A First Look at Sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU15yCk43J4 and completed a prediction sheet.

In PE, we worked through the Mission Impossible course that our class helped Mrs. Kloschinsky create. It was a tough course, so our "Spies" had to be careful maneuvering through the obstacles.

To introduce this week's Art lesson, the class watched the online story of "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen. After listening to the story, the students talked about the main colours used throughout the book. They learned a new word, monochromatic...using many shades, or tints, of one colour. The students started the background of their project by using white paint for their moon. Slowly they added blue paint, creating a variety of tints to create their night scene. After painting, they worked on the foreground of their project by cutting out a branch and owl which will be glued onto their background next week.

Here are our super readers this week!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week who is also our super star reader! He is our first student to fly all the way back to the Amazing Race pit stop by reading 3600 minutes!!! Way to go! We are so proud of your determination to meet your goals.

Please continue to practice the music booklet that was sent home. Our Christmas concert is approaching fast!
