We were excited to hear all about their Thanksgiving weekend. Some of the students had so much to share that they wrote 3 or 4 pages in their journal! Journal writing is an independent activity but we help the students spell a word, if they are unsure of the proper spelling. They are beginning to consistently use their personal dictionaries to edit their own writing.
For our writing project this week, we took our Rock Art creations and the students wrote detailed and descriptive paragraphs about their rock. They began the paragraph with a topic sentence, followed by 5 detail sentences and finished their paragraph with a concluding sentence. They included details about where they found their rock, why it is special to them and what it looks like. These paragraphs were edited and then published using the chrome books and google docs. These will be on display until interviews on the 23rd.
In Math this week, we completed our final quiz for our Patterns Unit. We have moved on to our Number Sense Unit and have begun with place value.
This week we worked on...
-identifying the place value of digits in two and three digit numbers
-understanding the value of the digits
We were also able to spend a bit of time on Prodigy and Mathletics.
We are continuing to work through the letters in our cursive writing books. This week we learned how to properly form a Gg, Qq, Cc and Ii. We are so impressed with how careful the students work to neatly form their letters.
Thank you again to Mrs. Preece for helping us out this week! She was able to pull the students to practice spelling words and basic math facts. We sure appreciate the extra help!
Mrs. Livingstone started a new Art project with the students this week based on the book "Monster Mama". After reading the story to the class, she discussed how the illustrator of the story portrayed the characters. The students then participated in a directed drawing of their own character. After following the directions to illustrate their own "monster", they used wax crayons to complete the colouring. Next week, Mrs. Livingstone will pull the students to paint their hair by blowing through a straw.
In PE, the students practiced their throwing skills by participating in a variety of target games.
Congratulations to our flyers this week! We are so happy to see our students eager to read and record their home reading minutes for our Amazing Race!
We recognized our first Student of the Week at the assembly on Friday morning. The person who is awarded this certificate will have some very special jobs and responsibilities in our classroom throughout the following week.
