Blue Flame Kitchen

We were so fortunate to have ATCO's Blue Flame Kitchen, "Kids Can Cook" program come out to our school to teach the students about food, cooking skills and kitchen safety. Learning how to cook and prepare healthy food is a valuable life skill! Our class had a great afternoon and enjoyed the hands-on experience, making salsa and fruit salad. YUM! They were all given the recipes so that you can make them at home with your child.

The students come to school every Monday morning so excited to share about their weekend, Home Reading minute updates and special events that may have happened while they were away from school. Their Journal writing provides an outlet for them to share everything if they don't have the opportunity to chat with us before the school day begins.

The students started a new writing project in Language Arts. Mrs. Livingstone read the story "I Need My Monster" by Amanda Noll, which is about a small boy who "NEEDS" the monster under his bed in order to sleep during the night. After learning that his monster, Gabe, has left for a fishing trip, the little boy decides to interview other monsters for the job.

After reading the story, the class discussed the adjectives (or juicy) words the author used to describe the monsters. The students were then given an activity in which they had to choose descriptive words from a given list to fill in sentences about monsters.

The class worked together to create a 3B monster. This was done to give the students ideas on how to draw a monster for their writing project. The students participated by giving suggestions about things such as body shape, number and shape of eyes and the type of tail. After doing an example with the class, the students were all given their own piece of paper to draw a monster they would like to have under their bed.

After drawing and colouring the monster under their bed, the students used descriptive words to create a graphic organizer which will be used for their writing. They were encouraged to think of "juicy" words so that someone who is reading about their monster can visualize what it looks like if they didn't have the picture.

The students watched a version of the book online and then used their web of descriptive words to complete a guiding writing activity.

Here is the link for the video of "I Need My Monster", if you would like to watch it at home with your child.

We continued working through our new unit in Math, called "Number Sense". This week the students worked on...

-representing three-digit numbers with base ten materials
-writing numbers represented by base ten blocks
-understanding how to represent numbers in expanded form and how to recognize a number written in expanded form
-reading and writing number words for any number between 0 and 99

Using dice, they rolled three digit numbers and represented them by drawing base ten blocks and writing the expanded form.

In Social, we talked about how a compass works. The students had the opportunity to go outside and try them out. They were all asked to see if they could get their compass to find north. After finding north, we talked about different landmarks that are found around Devon in all eight directions. The landmarks were then recorded in their books on a compass rose. It was great to see how many students know their way around Devon!

They also practiced reading maps keys and learned about different landforms.

The students learned about a scale on a map and answered questions about the distances using a ruler.

Please check your child's backpack for the Mapping Assignment that was given today. It will be due on Tuesday, October 23rd.

Mrs. Livingstone pulled the kids one-on-one to complete their "Monster Mama" art from last week. They did an excellent job and they are all very unique!

This week in Physical Education, the students worked through a variety of locomotion and target stations. They also had the opportunity to enjoy the great weather outside!

We are so impressed with our eager readers! Way to go!!!

Enjoy the SUNSHINE this weekend!
