The entire school also enjoyed a common reading time. We surprised our class with a special book for them to read and take home with them.
We had the opportunity to have a special guest from the Devon Lion's Club come read to us. She also left us with a special gift to read as a class.
RBES took part in a wellness afternoon. Each student chose a specific "theme pack" and then rotated through three sessions. The themes included... Creative and Calm, Nature Lovers, Nutrition, Friendship and Express Yourself. We will be having a second wellness afternoon on June 2nd where the students will be able to try a different theme.
The students enjoyed a Celtic Traditions performance by Kierah, a multi award winning celtic fiddler.
Author, Tammy Sosnowski, the author of "Martin Lost His M" also came to visit our school. She presented to the whole school and then the grade 3 classes were treated to a special session with her.
In Language Arts this week, we continued working on fractured fairy tales. We read the books "The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot" and "The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark". After reading the story, we worked through a venn diagram to compare the story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution) between this story and "The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf".
We continued reading from our Collections series. It is great to see how much their confidence has grown when reading aloud to the class. After reading together, the students were given the opportunity to pick a buddy and read the next selection, taking turns after each paragraph.
In Math, we finished our division unit by working through a variety of word problems. The students were given problems and had to figure out whether to use a multiplication or division equation. They wrote a unit test which will be reviewed with them next week.
The students started a new math program called "Number Rumble" where they work through a variety of different activities for each unit within the curriculum. This program is only available during school hours until the beginning of June so we will try our best to allow them the opportunity to work through the activities a few times each week.
We will be starting multiplication mad minutes next week. Please check your child's mailbag for information on our Yogurt Parfait Challenge! We went over this in class with the students and they are very excited!! They would definitely appreciate your help by quizzing them and making sure they are prepared!
We started learning about Ukraine in Social Studies. The students started colouring their title pages, which included the flag, coat of arms and map. We also started reading about Ukraine in the city and in the country. We looked at our map of the world to find Ukraine in relation to Canada and to learn that it was in the continent of Europe. As we read the text, the students will be learning how to make "jot notes" of the important information. We will be learning about the culture throughout the next few weeks before heading to Ukrainian Cultural Village on May 24th! Information about this field trip will be sent home next week.
We were also lucky to have grandpa Forchuk translate our names to Ukrainian for us. The kids used a Ukrainian alphabet guide to help them pronounce their names in Ukrainian. Thank you Mr. Forchuk!
In Physical Education, we started working on soccer skills. The students practiced passing, stopping and keeping control of the ball. We are lucky to be able to enjoy the nice weather throughout this unit!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
