Celebrating Ukrainian Culture...

We had an amazing time at Ukrainian Village and ended up with the perfect weather for an outdoor field trip. The students enjoyed their experience "going back in time". They had the opportunity to go to school in 1927, learning some arithmetic, roman numerals, listening to a story and enjoying a few games at recess. The rules and structure of running a school house were much different back then but the students loved the experience.

We also visited a number of other buildings and learned about the culture from the people who "live" there. We went to Burdei, Slemko House and Pigsty, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Demchuk Blacksmith Shop, Wostock Hardware Store, Police Post and Hilliard Hotel. The students also took a wagon ride around the town site. They learned how to say hello, goodbye and thank you in Ukrainian and were encourage to use the language when they visited each building.

To finish off our study of Ukraine, the students enjoyed a special lunch of perogies, kubasa, cabbage rolls and Kiev cake. Thank you so much to the parents who volunteered their time to cook up our meal!

In Language Arts this week, the students worked on their fractured fairy tale. The started writing the middle parts of their story, introducing their version of the "Big Bad Wolf". We have been working on adding descriptive words and "instead of said" words when using dialogue. (Ex. yelled, demanded, growled)

During our reading block, the students have been reading passages about the stages of a butterfly's life cycle. After reading and highlighting important parts on their own, they answer comprehension questions. We have been working on answering questions in complete sentences by using part of the
question in their answer.

We finished our unit on fractions in Math, by comparing different fractions of the same shapes. The students took home their work from this unit and will have a test on Monday.

In Social, we have been working on a class project. They finished their Google Slides about Ukraine and presented them to the class. Each group was assigned two slides and did a great job finding pictures to go with their topic and writing an informative paragraph.

We continue to watch our caterpillars (larva) grow. They must be eating a ton because they are now about 3-4cm in length. Some of them have headed up to the top of the container and we think they might be getting ready to make a chrysalis. We will have to see what happens over the weekend! The students are all very excited to watch the changes taking place.

To go along with our Life Cycle unit in Science, we also decided to plant sunflower seeds. Mrs. Forchuk's mom came in and helped the students plant their sunflower seeds. This also fits in nicely with our recent unit on Ukraine as this is the national flower of the country. We read about the changes that will take place within the next month. They will all be responsible for taking care of their seeds and we are hoping to send the students home with tiny plants at the end of June!

We began our Life Cycle unit learning out the different groups that an animal can be classified as. We talked about their body covering, how they move and where they live (land or water). The different groups we looked at are mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, amphibians and insects.

We lucked out with beautiful weather for our first week of swimming. Depending on which group the students are in, they have been working on their floats, glides, front or back swim.

Our week was so busy that we didn't have a lot of time for an Art project. Since the students love Art Hub we decided to do a quick directed drawing of a sunflower.

We are happy to see that our class is still engaged in reading at home. Way to go!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!!
