On Tuesday we had a First Nations, Metis and Inuit performance from Ian Porteous. The Cultural Wheel was a presentation that used a variety of instruments and story telling to expose the students to to the culture.
Typing Club is a chrome book activity that we have been doing some mornings before announcements. The students are eager to learn Home Row positioning and hope to speed up their typing. Typing Club takes the students through a gradual progression of letter placement and complexity. It is exciting to see some of them beginning to use this placement when they type up good copies of activities we have done.
We continued our study of poems for Poetry Month and created acrostic poems about Spring. We brainstormed a variety of favourite activities, events and changes that take place as the weather warms up. The students then used this list of ideas to form detailed sentences about Spring. The first sentence had to start with a S the second sentence started with a P and then R and so on.
To go with our SPRING acrostic poems we created optical illusion kites. This was a complex art project, with many directions to follow, but the students did great and they turned out so well!
We also continued our All About Me writing activity this week. We wrote, edited, typed and illustrated our fourth paragraph for our memory books. It is great to see the students using more detailed, complex sentences and juicy descriptive words.
We met with our grade 1 buddy class to do some partner reading. Our students really enjoy reading to and listening to their grade 1 buddies.
We completed a Level O reading comprehension passage this week. Level O is considered reading material that is AT grade level for this time of year. There were 5 multiple choice questions that followed the reading passage. To be reading and understanding grade level material, we are looking for 4/5 or 5/5 on the comprehension questions. We went over and discussed the one that was sent home this week. We will be reading more level O passages in the next few weeks, so please watch for them to come home.
In Math, we began our division unit. The students started the unit by learning how to share equally when the number of sets is known. They were also taught how to find the number of sets when the number of items in each set is known.
In Social, we read about the services, communities and environment in Tunisia. As we read, we wrote down important facts and details in our lap books. We also did some highlighting on flashcards. The students helped to decide what important information needed to be highlighted.
Our Student of the Week made and shared jello, marshmallow rolls. They were DELICIOUS!!
Thank you!
