Remembrance Day

We took some time this week to focus on the importance of Remembrance Day. We read a book called, "A Poppy is to Remember" and talked about what we will think about during the moment of silence. Then they used these ideas to write a paragraph in their Journals.

Art this week was based on Remembrance Day. We started our project by brainstorming what peace is to us. The students then chose their top 3 from the list or came up with their own. These 3 ideas were put put into sentences to create a poem about peace. After the sentences were edited, the students typed them on their chrome books and changed the font and size. The next part of the project had the students using Google to find pictures containing a poppy. Once everything was printed off, the students were shown how to fold and cut paper to make hearts. Each student needed 4 hearts of the same size to create a poppy to add to their black and white picture.

This week we started a new spelling program. This will allow us to focus more on in class activities to build spelling pattern skills. Your child will still be responsible for practicing a list of words (which includes two challenge words from our curriculum focus) so they are prepared for their test on Friday. If you are struggling to get your child to practice their words at home, try some new "fun" ways to study. They could use Scrabble letters, a white board  or chalk board (Dollar Stores usually have these and the markers/chalk for a very good price), Spelling City or typing them in a Google Doc using different colours and fonts.

The students will still be learning 5 new Word Wall Words every week that will be added to the bulletin board in the classroom. They will be using these words to practice well written sentences, including proper capitalization and punctuation.

For our daily read aloud, we started a class novel study of Freckle Juice. Before we started the book, the students all made predictions about what it would be about based on the title.

While reading each chapter, we stop frequently to discuss what is happening in the book and make predictions about what we think will happen next. We also talk about vocabulary words, discussing the meaning based on the context of the sentence.

After each chapter, the students work on different activities. This week they worked on putting words into alphabetical order and creating a recipe for freckle juice with a partner. They also worked on a visualization project where they had to draw the image that they had in their head after Andrew drank the secret freckle juice recipe.

This week we completed 3 more handwriting letters ~ Pp, Ss and Rr.

We completed our Patterning unit in Math by writing a short quiz on skip counting using money.

We also started a new unit, Number Sense, where we will work on representing numbers one to one thousand.

This week we worked through the following three lessons.

1. The students learned about place value of two and three digit numbers and used the words one, tens, and hundreds to identify the corresponding numeral.

2. The students used base ten blocks to represent three-digit numbers.

3. They worked on representing numbers in expanded form.

In Science, we started a new unit called "Hearing and Sound". We started the unit with an activity to make predictions about what we already know about sound. They students answered true or false to a number of statements and then we watched a video giving evidence about whether the statements were correct or not.

We read the book called "The Listening Walk" and then took the students on their own listening walk, while identifying and recording both indoor and outdoor sounds.

We also watched a video on how humans make sound. The students were shown how the wind pipe and vocal cords work in the production of sound. After the video, we completed a flap for our lap books.

The students were excited to use the chrome books for a "Listening to Reading" block. Most of the students enjoyed books on Storyline Online. Here is the link if you would like to use it at home.

We had a few students fly to new countries this week! Way to go!!!
