India Cultural Day

What an exciting way to end the week! We spent the afternoon immersed in India's culture. The 3 grade 3 classes rotated between the classrooms, trying something different in each room. The students were exposed to the food, games, crafts, henna art and clothing. They even rose for the India National Anthem. Each student also went home with a peacock feather ~ India's National Bird!

A big thank you to a few of our parents who helped prepare for our special culture day!

The students were also super excited to receive a special delivery from the North Pole!!!! Santa and his Elves took the time to write back to us and our class loved sharing their letters with each other! We made sure to send a copy of their original letter (as well as copy the reply), so these will be included in their memory books at the end of the year.

Our school had an author visit this week! Tololwa Mollel spent an hour with our grade 3 and 4 students re-telling some of his favourite books. He has written 16 children's books and among them are award winning titles such as The Orphan Boy, Rhinos for Lunch and Elephants for Supper, Big Boy and My Rows and Piles of Coins.

We practiced the other 35 of our spelling review words this week. The students completed activities and played a variety of games to practice the words. The review word search has been a hit! It was great to see improvement from the pretest to the post-test.

Our class decided to try out a Readers Theater ~ Bob The Goofy Reindeer this week and they did an amazing job! After practicing our lines individually, they did some choral reading and a run through as a whole class. They did such an amazing job that we decided to perform for one of the kindergarten classes! They loved it!!

The students were so excited that we finally managed to fit in a bit of cursive writing. This week we worked on the letter Cc.

In Math this week, we have been working on regrouping. Our POW for the week is great practice with the "stacking" method that has been taught. Please challenge your child with additional questions if they are struggling with the weekly POW.

We used base ten blocks to show the different numbers we were adding, which was the first step in regrouping.

Then we put the visual together with the stacking method to complete some math problems as a class and then completed some practice questions in their duotangs.

We also learned a new math game called "Rock Add Roll". The students were able to practice stacking numbers that they rolled with dice. Then they added the two digit numbers together. The player with the higher number won the round.

This week the students started working on photo collages for their memory books. Each month they will choose pictures from a folder that is shared with them by email. Then they design their own collages using Google Slides. These will be printed out so that they will have a copy for their memory books at the end of Grade 3.

We have had 2 very cold weeks! The bonus of this weather is indoor recess and the opportunity to play some board games!! The students loved trying out different games we have in the class. It has been a good way to reinforce sharing, taking turns and being a good winner/loser.

This week during our daily advent calendar draw, 2 "teacher" tags were pulled. The students chose Mrs. Kloschinsky and Mr. Larson to enjoy the chocolates!

Our readers continue to fly around the world! We love how eager our class is to read!
We continue to work on our TOP SECRET art project but we had to share one part of it! The students have been learning the handwriting letters to spell MERRY CHRISTMAS. They have been practicing a lot and it shows! They are SO proud!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
