We enjoyed a
great Halloween day together! The day started off with a school wide parade. We
headed to the gym to look at all the creative costumes this year and had the
opportunity to show ours off too! We did manage to complete a bit of work
throughout the day. The students worked on a Journal entry and most of them
chose to write about their costume or what they would be doing for trick or
treating that evening. We also did a bit of Math and brainstormed words to make
BINGO cards for the afternoon activities.
In the
afternoon, we played a few Minute to Win It games. The students tried out
their skills at Smartie Suckup, Rocket Towers, and Ghost Poop Pickup! There
were prizes for the winners and most of the students were very focused and
determined.
Thank you to the families who brought food for our party. We appreciate the contributions and the class enjoyed digging in while they enjoyed a movie.

This week,
we finished working on our “I Need My Monster” sentences. We talked about
different sentence starters to make our paragraph more interesting to read.
Then they worked on the chrome books and typed up a good copy to publish for
their memory book.
We also read
a few books about Remembrance Day and the importance of wearing a poppy. The
students talked about peace and what it means to them. They were then asked to
put this into writing. The writing was then typed, edited and put together with our art for the week.
In Math, we
worked on writing numbers in expanded form. For example, in expanded form a
number can be stretched out into numbers or words.
457=
400+50+7
457= 4 hundreds
+ 5 tens + 7 ones
The teachers and students have all been set up on a website called “Mathletics” which was paid for by Parent Council. The students have usernames and passwords which have been sent home in their agendas. We will be using this program at school but the students are also encouraged to work on this math website at home. This website contains specific activities related to the outcomes that we are working on currently in Math. We will add activities as we move through the Grade 3 curriculum. It also has a mental math component called “Live Mathletics” where the students can play against students in their class, school or around the world.

This week in
Science, we continued talking about the different properties of rocks. We
worked through the definitions and the students added them to their lapbooks.
Next week, the students are invited to bring in a special rock from home
for our Rock Talk. They will be able to share their rock with the class and
should be prepared to talk about a few of the properties we have been talking
about, (shape, size, hardness, luster, streak colour, magnetism).
In Phys Ed.,
we continued to work on throwing and catching while maintaining control of the
ball. We also worked on balancing a ball while moving around the gym. As part
of our Dojo shopping, students may purchase a “PE class” to teach for 90 Dojo
dollars. This week, one of our students chose floor hockey as an activity to do
with the class.
For Art this
week, we used the time to finish some projects. The students had some time to
draw the monster under the bed to go with their “I Need My Monster” project.
They also worked on the chrome books to finish their Remembrance Day writing, search for a Remembrance Day picture and then they created a poppy to go with their chosen picture.
Here are
this week’s super readers. We are so impressed with the amount of Home Reading
that our class has been doing! We even have 2 readers who have now launched rockets and are flying around the Amazing Race for the second time!!
We had some of our students receive awards for their participation in Cross Country!!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
