We talked a lot about home reading and the program we use to encourage daily practice at home. Reading at home on a nightly basis is strongly encouraged. This will help your child become better readers and build their confidence throughout their school career. The students worked on their "Amazing Race" planes, which will be flying around the room as they read and record home reading minutes. The first stop is Canada at 600 minutes. The last pit stop is "Peru" at 3000 minutes. We hope that all students make it to Peru by the end of the school year. Your child is welcome to read any reading materials you have at home, their library books or books borrowed from the public library. If you are short books or would like more variety, please send us a note or email and your child can take books from our class library.
We played a BINGO game to get to know our classmates a little better. The students enjoyed interviewing each other to learn more about their peers.
In the afternoon, we were entertained by Steve Harmer with his Motivational Magic show. The students were reminded of the importance of being humble and kind friends who embrace their unique qualities.
We read a story called "What if Everybody Did That?"
We talked about the importance of not following what other people do. Just because someone else does something, doesn't make it right.
As a class, we brainstormed things we are excited about, wish for and are nervous about as we start Grade 3. The students worked on an assignment about how they are feeling as they start this new school year.
For Language Arts, we read "My Mouth is a Volcano" which is a book about a little boy who can't keep his mouth from "erupting" other people while they are talking.
We talked about the importance of not interrupting others and how it might make the other person feel. We also came up with some strategies to use to keep us from "erupting". We then worked on some sentence writing and illustrating to describe a time when they were interrupted by someone.
After they completed their work they had some time to practice their addition skills by playing cards with a classmate.
For Art this week we read a story called "The Squiggle". It was about a little girl who finds a squiggle on a sidewalk and uses her imagination to change it into all kinds of different pictures.
The students were given a squiggle and asked to make it into a picture of their own.
At the end of each day, our class will be having their reading block. This will include three components of the Daily 5 program, Read to Self, Listening to Reading and Read to Someone. This week, the students found a place within the classroom and practiced reading to themselves.
