In Language Arts, we read a story called, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation".
Then the students had a few moments to reflect on their favourite summer memory. We talked about how to write a paragraph and the importance of a topic and concluding sentence. The students then worked on a "sloppy copy".
Students also completed another Journal entry. This is meant to be a "free write", where the students can write about any topic that interests them. Some choose to tell us about their weekends and others have been writing stories.
We also read a few more stories from our Collections Series. This "read aloud" time is very important to developing stronger reading skills. We have had more eager volunteers to read, which is great to see. We strongly encourage you to have your child read out loud to you each night.
Our Words Their Way program has not begun yet but we have been working on spelling patterns using rhyming words. We started with transportation words and as a class, we brainstormed short rhyming words for each.
OH MY! The class was so excited to begin learning cursive writing. This week, we learned how to form the letters Aa and Dd.
We also read a book called, "I'm Gonna Like Me".As a class, we brainstormed words we could use to describe ourselves. The students were asked to choose six to add to their art project from last week.
If you are in the school this week, please come by our classroom to take a look at the art displayed in the hallway!
In Math, we continued working on creating and describing increasing patterns. We did some pattern building practice on our mini whiteboards as well.
We also played a really fun game of addition war! Ask your child to teach you this game. They ALL had a blast!
In Social Studies, we continued our unit on Mapping by looking at a Key. We had a little activity to do using a map, key and the compass rose.
We incorporate Healthy Hearts everyday in our classroom. On Monday, we had a Mindful Monday Meeting. Each student had an opportunity to talk about how they are feeling so far this school year. They were encouraged to talk about anything that bothered them, make suggestions or give positive comments to classmates. Then we watched a short video about how to relax and calm ourselves using proper breathing techniques.
"Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind".
The students had the opportunity to share what with us what kind of books they love to read. We hope to try to build our classroom library around the books they are interested in.
We are so proud of the class for participating in our Home Reading program. Two students flew to Canada this week by reading 600 minutes at home so far this school year! WAY TO GO!!!!
We met up with our buddy class for art and we read the story "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds.
