Welcome back!

We started our week by talking about Ukraine's national flower, the sunflower. We brainstormed questions we would like to know about sunflowers. The students filled the entire whiteboard with facts to research such as...
How tall do sunflowers grow?
How many seeds do sunflowers have?
What colours can sunflowers be?
What kind of soil do sunflowers grow best in?
How did the sunflower get its name?
After creating a list of questions, the students worked on their own to find the answers to the questions they were interested in.
Next week, the students will work on organizing and typing their information into paragraphs.

We played a game of battleship to practice their spelling words this week. They loved this!
We also started our Spring Handwriting Joke Book. The kids really enjoyed this!
In Math, we started using rulers as a standard unit of measurement. We discussed the difference between millimetres and centimetres. The students worked through a series of questions to find different lengths of objects around our classroom.
We also compared a centimetre to a metre and did some measuring with the metre sticks. They had to estimate and then measure various named items and also items within a certain measurement.
In Social, we started an online research project on Ukraine. Students were given questions to research on a specific website. This week we worked with 3D!
For Art this week we created sunflowers. This project was done in a few steps. The students drew sunflowers which then they went over with white glue. They glue dries clear to make their outline of a sunflower. Using chalk pastels and blending techniques, they filled in the petals and stem.
Friday was Mental Wellness day at our school. Students from grades 1-4 rotated through different stations such as Mindful
Breathing, Drama, Yoga, Outdoor Games and Bucket Filling.
Congratulations to these students who flew to new countries this week!

Here is our new Student of the Week!
