Remembrance Day

As a class we read the story, "Why We Remember". We talked about the meaning of Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. The students were then given an assignment to think of things that resemble peace to them. Students wrote their ideas down which were then published. They continued working on their project by finding pictures that resembled Remembrance Day and then created their own poppy using heart cut outs. They turned out beautiful and displayed what Remembrance Day means to the Grade 3 students.

We reviewed how to write a proper paragraph, which includes a topic sentence, details and a concluding sentence. This week, the students wrote about what they will think about during the moment of silence at the Remembrance Day assembly. They met with us to edit their writing and then began publishing their paragraph by typing them up. They have also been working on learning how to change the font, size and colour.

For Art this week, we worked on a wreath for the Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday. We have become experts at cutting out hearts and assembling them to create a poppy.
We began our whole class novel study of Freckle Juice. The students enjoyed reading the first chapter together, making note of the characters and setting. We discussed magic potions and the good and bad things that could happen. The students then drew a picture of themselves showing the best thing that could happen and the worst thing.

The students were also given an assignment to look through Chapter One to find words with ir, er, or, ur, ar, sounds. They had some time to complete this with a partner and then we shared our lists with the class.

In Math this week, we worked on comparing and ordering numbers to 1000. The students learned about the greater than and less than signs. They also worked on ordering numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. They learned a new game called, "Who Has the Greatest Number". This required the students to take a chance at choosing the best place value to put their flipped card into. They loved this game and it has become a favourite! It is also an easy game to play at home with your child.

The students also did some review of rounding numbers, using the rule of 5 and up, rounds up to the nearest 10. They enjoyed being challenged with larger numbers.

We are nearing the end of our Rocks and Minerals science unit. We have finished the lapbook and did review in class over a few days. The students did a unit test on Tuesday.

We took some class time to review for the test by playing a fun game!

We did a soil excavation experiment. The students studied samples of garden soil, peat moss, clay, sand and oil sand. they used magnifying glasses to take a closer look, searching for rocks, plants, insects and other items in the samples. They also felt each sample and described how it felt to them. Their observations were recorded in a chart, so they could determine the similarities and differences.

We have completed our unit on Mapping and will be flying to India to learn about our first country. The students were given passports and have filled out the personal information. The passports will be used as we fly to each new country of study. They were very excited to pose for a "serious" passport picture, which will also be included.

Before flying to India, we decided to make a list of things we should know before traveling to a new country. Together we brainstormed and came up with questions like... What kind of money do we need to bring? What language do they speak? What kind of clothing do they wear? The students researched their questions on the Chrome books and shared them with the class. We are all ready for our trip to India!!!

For gym, the children played Mission Impossible. This is a school favourite!

We have also begun a google slides project. The students are creating their own memory book slide show; one slide for each month. They really enjoyed this task and had some time to experiment with font styles and sizes, background colours and image layout.
Congratulations to our students who reached 600 minutes in our Home Reading program!!! Way to go!

One of our students made it to India this week by reading 1200 minutes! Awesome job!!!

AND Congratulations to our student who made it to Tunisia, reading 1800 minutes!! Way to go!

Congratulations to our new student of the week!
