Welcome Fall!?!?

It has been another chilly week! Mother Nature must have forgotten an entire season...FALL!

The students were very busy in Language Arts this week. They completed their Journal entry on Monday, telling us all about their weekend. They are working on writing at least 5 complete sentences with capitals, punctuation and details.

We read the story "Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen". The students were then given an activity to order the sequence of events. With a partner, they worked together to place sentence strips in order of what happened first, second, third and so on.

The students completed sentences starters about their year in Grade 3;
I am excited about...
I wish we could...
I'm wondering about...
I'm nervous about...

We started cursive writing! They are very excited to learn how to hand write each letter of the alphabet. We will not be going in alphabetical order, but instead, we will be learning the letters according to the way they are formed.

The first Back and Forth entry was sent home this weekend. Every Friday we will be spending some time brainstorming with the class about the activities that took place throughout the week. This week, we also wrote a sample entry with the students so they would know what is expected of them. We are hoping that each week they write a minimum of 5 complete sentences. This is an independent activity and over the course of the year you should see growth in your child's writing. Please spend some time looking over the information your child has put in this duotang and reply to their writing each week. They really get excited when they see someone has taken the time to write back to them!

At the beginning of the school year, all of the students in Black Gold Regional School Division are required to complete a screening tool called the HLAT. The students were given a writing prompt and then asked to create a planning page and write about the topic. This year, they wrote about a place they would like to visit, which could be real or imaginary.

In Math the students worked on...

-distinguishing between growing and shrinking number patterns
-identifying the difference (gap number) and extending the number patterns by adding or subtracting the gap
-solving word problems using growing or shrinking patterns

The students wrote their first Math quiz, showing their understanding of number patterns. They also completed the Math screening tool, called the MIPI, sent out by Black Gold Schools. This screening tool was done on the chromebooks.

Mad Minutes this week were addition +2. The students are doing well meeting their daily individual goals. We were impressed with the amount of students who practiced over the weekend to prepare! Way to go!!! Next week will be addition +3.

We continued working through our lapbooks in Science. The students learned about the "Rock Cycle" and enjoyed a short video by our favourite scientist, Bill Nye.

They also learned the difference between rocks and minerals.
Rocks- They are made up of one or more minerals
Minerals- These have the same chemical makeup and crystal shape.

We talked about the different layers of the Earth and that it is composed of the inner and outer core, mantle and crust.

Locomotion continued to be the focus in Physical Education this week. The students worked through ten different stations. They loved rotating around the gym and we saw an increase in their confidence throughout the week!

1. Stretch
2. Hurdle Jumps
3. Crab Walk/Bear Walk
4. Jump Rope
5. Sprint
6. Hula Hoop Zig Zag Jump
7. Jumping Jacks
8. Ball Skippers
9. Scooters
10. Skier Jumps

In Art, we started an "I AM..." project. The students were asked to come up with 6 adjectives to describe themselves. Thank you to Quinten's Grandma for volunteering her time to work with the kids on their list of adjectives. This list will be put onto a painted rainbow background. The paintings will be drying over the weekend so the students can add the descriptive words about themselves next week! We have some fabulous little artists who take their time and really care about doing an awesome job!

The students were so excited to visit Mrs. Caudron during their first visit to the Library in Grade 3! They reviewed the rules and enjoyed a story. Each week, they will be able to take out two books which need to be returned before the following Tuesday.

WOW!!! We have some very eager readers in our class! A few of our students flew to the first country by reading 600 minutes.

Thank you to Nash's family for the delicious treat on Friday!!! SMILE cookies from Tim Hortons!

Fruit order forms will be sent home on Monday! Please look for them in your child's mailbag!
