Terry Fox Walk

The staff and students participated in the Terry Fox walk on Friday! It wasn't ideal weather but we didn't hear any complaining from our students. Our walk wasn't even a fraction of what Terry Fox ran and he persevered through much worse conditions. Thank you to the parents who came out to join us!!!

Before the annual walk, the students learned more about Terry Fox by reading a short article called "The Story of Terry Fox". After reading this together as a class, they worked independently to answer questions. They were also given a "Sentence Scramble" activity and were required to make complete sentences with a set of words.

This week in Language Arts, we focused on complete and incomplete sentences. After talking about what makes a sentence complete, the students completed two activities to distinguish and sort complete and incomplete sentences.

The students learned about the two parts of a complete sentence...

The NAMING part which tells who or what.
The TELLING part which tells what the naming part is doing.

The students practiced finding the NAMING and TELLING parts by completing an activity and then doing a short quiz.

This group of students really enjoys reading aloud as a class. We love to see their confidence increase throughout the year as they volunteer to read in front of their peers. We are encouraging them to pause at periods, sound out new words and use expression. Listening to others read is also very beneficial for those who are not ready to read to a large group.

Your child completed their second "Back and Forth" entry this week. After brainstorming as a class, the students were asked to write a minimum of five complete sentences to tell you about their week. Their writing is sent home without being edited so you will see improvements throughout the year. Please take a few minutes to reply to your child. They get so excited to see that someone has written back to them!

In Math, the students worked on...

-identifying rules for patterns made by adding or subtracting the same number
-extending increasing or decreasing number patterns using rules
-using rules to identify mistakes within patterns

They also wrote a quiz at the end of the week to assess their understanding of pattern rules. Mad Minutes this week were addition +3. Next week will be addition +4. If you see that your child is struggling, please review these basic facts with them. Recalling basic facts is a very important skill to master and will help them throughout their entire school career!

Every student at RBES has a paid subscription to Mathletics. This is an online Math program that has a variety of activities and games for the students to engage in. They were all given their username and password last week, which can be found in their agendas. We will be using this program in class on a regular basis but if they are asking for extra "screen" time at home, they are strongly encouraged to use Mathletics.

Here is the link... MATHLETICS

In Science, we focused on identifying the different properties of rocks and minerals. They were introduced to new vocabulary words and we discussed the meaning of these words. In their lapbook, they made a new flap with the properties and definitions.

Streak Colour- What colour is left when you rub it on another surface?
Light- Is it opaque, translucent, or transparent when you shine a light on it?
Hardness- Is it hard or soft when you scratch it?
Feel- What is the texture when you touch it?
Smell- Does it have an odor?
Luster- Is it shiny or dull?
Magnetic- Does it attract a magnet?
Shape- What special shapes do you observe?

We spent time talking about the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque and finding examples of objects around the room.

The class was very excited to have their first Science lab!!! They spent the afternoon testing their two rocks and looking at the different properties using what they have learned so far in the unit.

The focus in Physical Education this week was cooperation and teamwork. The students learned a few new games such as, Builders and Destroyers, Jewel Smugglers, and 3s a Team Not a Crowd.

We finished our "I AM" Art project by adding their words to describe themselves.

The Grade 3's were so excited to buddy up with the Grade 1 kiddos across the hall for some reading. The little ones loved being read to and our students loved feeling like the "big" kids.

Thank you to Quinten's Grandma who came in to help us out and read with each of the students. The students really enjoy the one-on-one time!

We are so impressed with our students and how eager they are to log their Home Reading minutes! We had a quite a few students who took flight this week!!! Way to go!

STAY WARM!!! We will see you next week!
