Valentine's Day

We started the week off by decorating monster boxes for our Valentine's Day mail. They used a variety of materials, including pom poms, pipe cleaners, foam hearts and googly eyes. The kids loved this project and used their imaginations to create a unique box.

The students enjoyed celebrating Valentine's Day with their friends. We delivered mail, played a few Minute to Win It games and filled our bellies with delicious snacks. Thank you to those parents who were signed up to bring food for our party. We really appreciate your help!

Candy Heart Stack'em Up...students worked on their steady hands and patience!!!

Cinnamon Heart Suck'em Up...a few dizzy heads after a couple rounds of this game!

We had our second week of skating. We saw a lot of improvement in their confidence over the two weeks. Some of the students who required encouragement to move away from the boards during the first week, were now zooming around the middle of the rink. The students enjoyed relay races, tag and hockey. Thank you to the parents who came to tie skates and brave the ice with the kids. We really appreciate you!!!

RBES has been collecting donations towards heart and stroke disease through Jump Rope for Heart. This week, the students took part in a variety of skipping activities that were set up around the gym. They worked hard and kept their hearts pumping!

In Language Arts, we worked on acrostic poems. An acrostic poem has one word running along the side. Each of those letters represents a word or phrase that relates to the main topic. The students were given the word FRIEND and had to come up with short message for each letter about the topic. They completed a "sloppy copy" and then edited it together with us before completing the published version for their memory books.

We also worked on our All About Me illustrations this week. The kids are putting in a tremendous amount of detail and effort into their drawings. We will keep these published paragraphs to add to their grade 3 memory book.

We completed our last 3 cursive letters this week!! The students now know all 26 alphabet letters and will be doing more of their work in handwriting.

We also completed some extra practice with "descenders" and "curves".

In Math, we have been working on solving word problems. The students have been taught to read each sentence and circle numbers or words that might be important when solving the problem. Key words which help the students decide whether a word problem is a subtraction or addition equation would be... in total, altogether, how many more. The students are required to write the equation, solve it and then write a complete sentence answering the question.

In Science, we completed the second challenge in our Survivor unit.

"We made it safely across the crack in the earth, narrowly escaping the spewing lava. As we continue to explore the island, we hear the roaring sound of a river nearby. Approaching the river, we realize that it is too fast and deep to cross. We really don't want to turn around and go back to the beach. We can see banana trees across the river with ripe, delicious bananas hanging from them. Our stomachs growl at the sight of the fruit. We decide that we need to cross the river to reach the bananas. In order to cross the river, we will have to build another bridge. Nearby, we see some tree bark that we can use as beams to support our bridge. Our job is to test a variety of beam designs to see which on will work best for our foot bridge."
Discovery - Through this challenge, the students learned that not all beam designs support the same mass. The students discovered that the box girder was a stronger design than the accordion or
rectangular beam.

For art this week, we completed an Art Hub drawing of the Olympic Rings and of Soohorang, the 2018 Olympic Mascot. The students love Art Hub and did a fantastic job following the step by step directions to complete this project!

Indoor recess fun....

Here are the Amazing Race flyers for the week...

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!!
