Our First Week!

We were so excited to meet our brand new crew!!! We are looking forward to a wonderful year getting to know all of our new students!

We spent the first day taking pictures, organizing supplies, figuring out a bit of our routine and getting to know each other.

Our class is SUPER excited about our Amazing Race Home Reading program. They have been encouraged to read on a nightly basis at home so that they are able to fly around the world. They will all start at Canada and for every 600 minutes they read, they will fly to India, Ukraine, Tunisia and Peru! At each pit stop, there will be a special prize to take home. This week, they spent some time colouring their planes. We also took pictures of them as pilots.

Each student made their own bookmark as well. They are excited to use them during "Read to Self". Each day we will be setting aside time for the students to read on their own. This will also give us time to read with a few students on a daily basis. Throughout the year we will also "Buddy Read" with our own classmates as well as Grade One classes and participate in "Listen to Reading" on the Chrome Books. We already have a bunch of eager little readers!

Students are welcome to sign out and take home books from our classroom library.

In Language Arts this week, we read "How I spent My Summer Vacation" and talked about what we did during our summer holidays. The students were given an organizer to plan a paragraph. We talked about introductions and conclusions as well as having detailed sentences in the middle.

They started with a "sloppy copy" which was then edited. The students used their "best" printing to complete a published copy. They will have time next week to illustrate their piece of writing.

We also talked about our Grade 3 year. We brainstormed things we are excited about, something we wonder, what we wish for and something we are nervous about. The students came up with great ideas!

We started working in our cursive writing books. Students who come to Grade 3 are always so excited to learn handwriting. As we learn letters and the students feel more confident, we will start handwriting our agenda notes. We are sure that they will all have their own "signatures" by the end of the year!!!

Each day we will set aside some time for the students to read aloud. We have started reading short stories in the Collections series. The students who feel comfortable reading to the class will have the opportunity to read aloud while the other students are encouraged to follow along in the book. As the year goes on, our hope is that every child will feel confident to read something aloud to the class, even if it is a short paragraph.

For Math this week, we started with a "confidence" building unit. The students were told they were going to learn FRACTIONS, like Grade 4, 5 and 6 students do! They were shocked at how easy it was and whipped through the booklet.

We also played an addition Math game. We will be starting daily Mad Minutes next week. Your child should be bringing their Mad Minute sheet home everyday. Please look over it with them and if you see they are struggling with a particular question, it might be a good idea to review it. Knowing the basic Math facts is important and will help them with more difficult Math concepts this year.

We started our first unit in Science, "Rocks and Minerals". The students worked on their title pages for their lapbooks, which will be used throughout the course of the unit.

We began working on our Back and Forth Journals, filling out information about the school and classroom. The students will be writing about their week and bringing them home every Friday for you to read and reply in.

We also set up the student's accounts on the Chrome Books. We will be using these on a regular basis for research projects in Social and Science, Math games, and listening to books. The students will also be typing and publishing certain pieces of their writing throughout the year.

To finish off our first week of school we welcomed RODZILLA! The kids had a blast watching this magician and scientist!
