In the afternoon, we headed down to Voyageur Park to collect rocks. The students were asked to find eight rocks with specific characteristics. They were also allowed to collect five rocks of their own choice. This collection will be used throughout the unit as we examine characteristics and properties of rocks and minerals.
Our Language Arts project this week was a Thankgiving theme. We read a book called "Most Thankful Thing". Then we had a class discussion so the students could all share what they were thankful for.
The students were asked to make a list of ten things they were thankful for. After creating their list, we decided to work on a class project. We called it, "3B's Thankful Tree".
The students picked their top three ideas and then traced and cut out heart shaped leaves. They added their "Thankful Things" onto the tree. Some were so excited about this class project that they added all ten!
The students also finished typing and editing their descriptive scarecrow paragraphs. They are now displayed in the hallway with their artwork.
In Math, we continued working through decreasing patterns. The students described different patterns and created their own pattern when given a specific pattern rule.
We continue to work through the addition Mad Minutes. This week we completed "Addition 5". The students are seeing improvements each day. Their graphs have helped them set daily goals of either improving their mark or the time they are completing the thirty questions in. If your child would like extra sheets to practice at home, please let us know and we would be happy to send a few extra home with them.
In Social, we labelled the provinces and territories within Canada. Then they worked in partners to complete an activity in their duotang. Their mapping assignments were also due on Friday.
On Friday, we worked on our first Back and Forth entry of the school year. Every Friday, your child will bring home their black duotang with a paragraph about their week at school. Before the students begin writing, we brainstorm about all of the different activities we complete throughout the week. They work at putting these ideas into sentences with capitals and punctuation. This writing is not edited before it goes home so we are hoping that you will see growth in their writing throughout the school year. Please read the entry with your child and reply back to them. The students are always excited to read what you have written.
To introduce our art project this week we read, " The Amazing Turkey Rescue".
Then we talked about zentangles, which are pictures filled with different patterns and lines. They were given a blank turkey picture and asked to fill it will fall colours using the different patterns and lines we discussed.
We had a few more students complete new reading goals. We have some very dedicated readers! Way to go!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
