We continued to work on our descriptive writing. We read the book, "I Need My Monster". This book is full of adjectives and juicy words to describe a variety of monsters.
After reading the story, we worked as a class to brainstorm descriptive words using our senses. We talked about words that would describe a monster using the sense of smell, sight, touch and sound. Then the students worked on their own to create their own monsters by using their favourite juicy words. Next week, they will continue to work on developing well written sentences to describe their monster.
We also read from our Collections book. The Hoot Club was about Super-Projects that students at other schools have done. It had our class thinking of cool activities we could do!
We finally found some time to complete another handwriting letter ~ Qq. The students LOVE learning the letters in cursive!
In Math, we continued to work on place value. Students used manipulatives and white boards to illustrate both concretely and pictorially, the meaning of numbers up to 1000.
They were also challenged with creating a "figure" using base ten blocks. They then had to count and add to show what number their figure represents. They are SO creative!!
In Science, we continued looking at the three different rock types. The students were given the opportunity to rotate around different stations to examine different groups of rocks.
We discussed the difference between rocks and minerals by reading a few books and watching some videos. Then we added these definitions to their lapbooks.
We also explored different properties of rocks. The students used the rocks they found on our "Rock Walk" to complete some testing in order to compare different rock types. They moved around to different stations within the classroom to explore the following properties of their rocks... length of rock, float or sink, hardness testing using a nail, penny and fingernail, finding carbonates using vinegar, rough or smooth, dull or shiny.
This week for Art, we read "Pumpkin Town" and completed a few crafts to decorate our room for Halloween. The students made pumpkin jack-o-lanterns and spinning ghosts.
In Gym this week, we worked on throwing a catching skills. We worked on these skills through a variety of partner activities and class games. A warm-up game called "Hot Dog Tag" is a new favourite.
We had a few more students fly to a new country this week. It is great to see how eager this class is to read!
Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!
